Tennis Season Rolls On with Three More Matchups

Bison host Temple Friday; HU women meet Maryland Saturday

WASHINGTON (February 6, 2025) – Howard University men's and women's tennis squads continue its spring season with matchups in the DMV area.
 
Friday (Feb. 7), both teams host Temple (TU) at the WTEF (Washington Tennis & Education Foundation's) East Capitol Campus. First-serve at 12:30 p.m. The following day (Feb. 8), HU women face Maryland (UMD) in College Park, Md. Match time is set for 10 a.m.

MATCHUP PREVIEWS
 
HOWARD WOMEN
 
HU women return to play after nearly a two-week hiatus.
 
Second-year Bison Ava Chambers (Wellington, Fla.) leads the way, winning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week (Jan. 31) after the team's last outing against Georgetown (Jan. 25).
 
Entering this season, HU was projected to finish second in league behind reigning league champion South Carolina State (SCSU). The program returns all 10 student-athletes, including five All-MEAC selections.
 
HOWARD MEN
 
Howard men come in with a 1-2 overall record, seeking to get back .500 on the young season.
 
Wednesday (Feb. 5), the MEAC unveiled its men's tennis weekly awards where Kaosie Nwokedi won the league's Rookie of the Week accolade.
 
TEMPLE WOMEN
 
TU women roll in with a 1-3 overall mark. The squad's lone victory came at Saint Joe's, 6-1 (Jan. 24).
 
Maria Martinez enters with a 2-1 record in singles competition, serving in the No. 3 slot for Temple.
 
TEMPLE MEN
 
Temple men enter Friday's showdown with a 1-1 mark. After knocking off inner city rival Saint Joe's, 5-2, the Owls fell at Penn State, 4-2.
 
Martim Marujo comes in with a 1-1 record in singles play, competing in the top spot for Temple.
 
MARYLAND WOMEN
 
Maryland enters with a 1-3 record, looking to snap a two-match skid.
 
Kallista Liu comes into Saturday's showdown with a perfect 2-0 mark in singles play, representing UMD in the top singles spot.
 
LAST TIMEOUT
 
On Jan. 31, the men's tennis team secured its first win of the season, taking down Loyola (Md.), 5-2, at home. Second-year Bison Michael Major, Jr. (Nassau, Bahamas) served as the club's top singles play, defeating Loyola's Nick Lawliss in straight sets (6-3, 6-4).
 
The following day (Feb. 1), HU men fell on the road at Delaware, 7-0.
 
For the women, they fell in their season opener at crosstown rival Georgetown, 5-2 (Jan. 25). In singles competition, Chambers secured a three-set victory in the No. 3 spot.
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
 
On Feb. 14, the Bison women battle Villanova on Valentine's Day. The following day (Feb. 15), both clubs square off against crosstown rival UDC at the WTEF East Capitol Campus. Both days start at 12:30 p.m.
