A Day at The Wharf with Women's Tennis

Fostering the growth of the game

WASHINGTON (September 23, 2024) – Earlier this month, Howard University women's tennis team participated in Women in Sports at The Wharf – a day of recognizing today's female athletes and learning how the next generation can get in the game with DC's leading tennis organizations, along with other sponsors like EventsDC.

"Celebrating Women in Sports is essential because it highlights the power and resilience of female athletes, both on and off the field," said Howard Director of Tennis Nicholas Askew.

Transit Pier turned into "Tennis Pier" where locals could watch the US Open Women's Finals on a big screen. Participants had the opportunity to learn to play tennis on the Washington Tennis Education Foundation's mini-court and go one-on-one with the Bison to find out who had the fastest serve. Young girls and women met the Bison and other teams from Black Girls Tennis Club and the Washington Area Tennis Association.

WTEN at Bedford Cup"At Howard University, we take pride in fostering an environment where our women athletes can thrive and break barriers," Askew continued. "Our tennis program, like all of our women's teams, is a shining example of excellence, dedication and leadership. Together, we are not just winning matches; we're shaping the future of sports for women everywhere."

The women's team kicked off their fall campaign Friday, September 13, when they hosted the annual Bedford Cup in College Park, Md. The Bison continue their fall season Saturday, October 5, in Cary, N.C. when they compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Invitational before closing out the fall slate at ITA Regionals (October 17-21).
