WASHINGTON, DC --- One of the final stops on the World Cup champion United States Women's National Soccer Team's Victory Tour will have a Howard University connection.
Former Bison women's soccer standout
Nia Walcott will be a part of the Trinidad & Tobago Senior Women's National Team that takes on the three-time Women's World Cup champions on Thursday, December 10 at 9 p.m. Eastern at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The friendly will air on ESPN2 and can also be viewed on the WatchESPN application.
Walcott, a Washington, D.C. area native and four-year letterwinner for Howard under head coach
Brent Leiba, helped lead the Bison to a program-record 13 victories en route to the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) regular season & tournament championships. The SWAC Tournament title was the first conference championship in Howard women's soccer history.
Walcott has been a part of the Trinidad & Tobago soccer pipeline as early as 2010, when she was selected for the country's U17 National Team as a senior at Elizabeth Seton High School in Maryland. She is eligible for the Trinidad & Tobago team since her mother, Kathy Ann Walcott, is a native of the country. Nia's younger sister Amira was also selected for the National team and has been in the program's pipeline since high school.
Leiba praised Walcott and her opportunity with the national team.
"We are so proud of Nia and her chance to play on a national stage. She was an instrumental part in leading this program to the achievements we have accomplished. It has been amazing watching her grow and develop into a tremendous player and person. For Nia to be named to the Trinidad & Tobago Senior National Team is such a wonderful and well-deserved achievement."
The last two seasons of Walcott's Howard career brought the most recognition to the Washington, D.C. native. During the 2013 & 2014 campaigns, Walcott earned the following awards:
- 2014 SWAC All-Tournament selection
- 2014 All-SWAC First Team
- 2014 College Sports Madness All-SWAC First Team
- Two 2014 SWAC Offensive Player of the Week awards
- One College Sports Madness SWAC Player of the Week award
- 2014 College Sports Madness Preseason All-SWAC Second Team
- 2013 College Sports Madness Independent First Team selection
