NORMAN, Okla. (May 21, 2026) – The Black College Golf Coaches Association (BCGCA) and GCAA (Golf Coaches Association of America) unveiled their 2025-26 BCGCA HBCU awards where Howard University saw three Bison acknowledged for their outstanding seasons. The announcement came Thursday afternoon.
Bison Director of Golf
Sam Puryear highlighted the afternoon, winning Division I HBCU Coach of the Year after leading the Bison to their third consecutive NEC title and NCAA postseason appearance. On the season, Howard won a pair of tournaments, including the conference championship.
Juniors
Francisco Perez (Los Mochis, Mexico) and
Mathis Perroni (Metz, France) made the Division I HBCU All-America Team. Both Bison earned a spot on the All-NEC First Team, alongside fellow classmate
Bear Huff (Riverside, Calif.), who received honorable mention.
Phalatphon Viboonviriyasakul (Florida A&M) won BCGCA HBCU Division I Golfer of the Year while Emilio Hernandez (North Carolina A&T State) claimed Division I Outstanding Freshman.
The awards recognize college golfers from all backgrounds across Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Coach Puryear and the Bison look to four-repeat as NEC Champions in spring 2027 and return back to the NCAA postseason.
