SWEETWATER, Texas – Howard University men's golf captured the team championship title at the Colin Montgomerie-HCU Invitational, finishing 17-under par to claim the event at Sweetwater Country Club hosted by Houston Christian.
Howard separated itself from the field across the first two rounds, posting scores of -11 and -10 before closing with a final-round +4 to finish comfortably ahead of the competition. Houston Christian (A) finished second at -4, while SE Louisiana placed third at +12.
Leading the way for the Bison was
Francisco Perez, who delivered a dominant performance to earn individual medalist honors at 14-under par. Perez opened the tournament with rounds of -7 and -6 before finishing with -1 in the final round to secure the victory.
Howard also received a strong performance from
Michael Perusse (Pearland, TX), who finished third overall at 7-under par after rounds of -1, -3 and -3.
Marlon Jones added another top finish for the Bison, tying for seventh at 2-under par after opening with rounds of -4 and -2.
Other performances included
Bear Huff (Riverside, CA) rounding out Howard's scoring lineup with a tie for 27th place at 7-over, posting rounds of +2, +1 and +4.
Freshman
Ander Martinez (Alvarado, Veracruz, Mexico) also competed for the Bison, finishing tied for 49th at 11-over across three rounds.
Howard returns to competition March 20–22 at the Carpetbagger Classic, hosted by Binghamton University in Urbana, MD.
