AMHERST, Va. (May 14, 2025) – Howard University men's golf team closed out its 2025 spring season with a 13
th-place finish at the NCAA Amherst Regional, hosted by Liberty University and held at the Poplar Grove Golf Club (par-70, 7,212 yards).
Throughout the four-day (May 11-14) tourney, HU faced several challenges like stoppage of play, heavy rain, etc. Despite the obstacles, Howard finished strong in round three, shooting 16-over par (296).
"I am super proud of these guys," said Howard Director of Golf
Sam Puryear after the tournament. "They showed up and played really well. We have a talented young group and it was great to gel at the right time while competing against the best. This shows where you stand."
Overall, the Bison shot 66-over par (906).
Fifth-year golfer
Marcus Smith Jr. (Rockford, Ill.) led the way, firing 2-under par (68) in round three with four birdies. The All-NEC First Team selection tied for 40
th overall (216, +6).
Sophomore
Mathis Perroni (Metz, France) wrapped up his first season with the Bison, recording 1-under par (69) with four birdies in the final round. The All-NEC Second Team honoree tied for 49
th place (219, +9).
Freshman
Cassius Blake (Birmingham, England) took 68
th overall (230, +20) while second-year Bison
Kezaia Dimosi (London, England) finished 70
th place (241, +31).
Sophomore
Bear Huff (Riverside, Calif.) rounded out HU, shooting 34-over par (244) in 54 holes of play.
"We have done some good recruiting," Puryear continued. "What we are bringing in with these young guys will help us continue to be better. We are excited about the future."
No. 7 Oklahoma won the Amherst Regional (830, -10), four strokes better than No. 18 Vanderbilt (834, -6). No. 30 Tennessee finished third overall (835, -5), followed by No. 43 Wake Forest (839, -1) and No. 19 Pepperdine (849, +9).
Texas State's Sakke Siltala placed first among individual golfers.
The top five teams and Siltala advanced to the NCAA Championship (May 23-28), held at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
Coach Puryear and the Bison look to three-peat as NEC (Northeast Conference) Champions while returning back to the NCAA Regional Round in spring 2026.
