Tennis’ Title Run Continues in the MEAC Semifinal Round

Bison look to take the next step for a pair of championships

CARY, N.C. (April 25, 2024) – Howard University men's and women's tennis continues their title runs Friday (April 26) in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Semifinal Round.
 
HU women battle No. 2 Delaware State (DSU) at 9 a.m., followed by the Bison men facing defending MEAC Champion and top-seeded South Carolina State (SCSU) at noon.

MATCHUP PREVIEWS
 
HOWARD WOMEN
 
HU women (11-9) entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed and knocked off No. 6 Norfolk State in the opening round, 6-1.
 
All-MEAC selection junior Nadia Pegram (Naples, Fla.) and MEAC Rookie of the Year Imani Jean (Brooklyn, N.Y.) lead the way with a combined 26 singles victories. In doubles play, the duo is 10-8.
 
DELAWARE STATE WOMEN
 
DSU (10-7) comes into the tournament as the No. 2 seed and earning the tiebreaker over HU with a 4-3 road win in D.C. (April 5).
 
In the opening round, Delaware State blanked No. 7 Coppin State, 4-0.
 
Dara Jula, Clara Kuehnle and Klaudija Lisovska lead the way for DSU, each being named to the All-MEAC Second Team.
 
HOWARD MEN
 
Howard men (6-10) rolled into the tourney as the No. 4 seed and topping rival No. 5 Morgan State in the MEAC First Round.
 
Senior Justin Cadeau (West Orange, N.J.) and All-MEAC selection newcomer Michael Major, Jr. (Nassau, Bahamas) lead the charge with 15 combined singles wins. In doubles competition, the duo is 7-6 overall.
 
SOUTH CAROLINA STATE MEN
 
SCSU (12-7) locked up the No. 1 seed after going a perfect 5-0 in league play.
 
All-MEAC First Team honorees Novak Novakovic and Mikalai Bankou lead the way for South Carolina State, along with Aissa Benchakroun (All-MEAC Second Team).
 
South Carolina State is led by MEAC Coach of the Year Hardeep Judge.
 
LAST TIMEOUT
 
Both squads reached to the semifinal round with a pair of victories Thursday (April 25).
 
On the women's side, the No. 3 Bison advanced after a 4-1 victory over No. 6 NSU.
 
Later on, No. 4 men's team moved on after eliminating rival No. 5 MSU with a 4-2 victory.
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
 
With a pair of victories, both squads advance to the MEAC Title match.
 
HU women face the winner between No. 1 South Carolina State and No. 4 Morgan State Saturday (April 27) at 9 a.m., while Howard men take on the winner between No. 2 Norfolk State and No. 3 North Carolina Central at noon.
