NORFOLK, Va. (February 24, 2024) – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) unveiled its men's and women's tennis weekly honors where Howard University saw three Bison acknowledged for their efforts against the UDC (Feb. 16) and Villanova (Feb. 17). The announcement came Friday (Feb. 23).
Newcomer
Michael Major, Jr. (Nassau, Bahamas) was named MEAC Men's Rookie of the Week while junior
Nadia Pegram (Naples, Fla.) and freshman
Imani Jean (Brooklyn, N.Y.) swept the women's side, winning Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Major grabbed a singles win over UDC's Antonio Durall in straight sets (6-3, 7-5). In doubles play, he teamed with senior
Justin Cadeau (West Orange, N.J.) to down the Firebirds' Durall and Mauricio Corty.
Pegram went a perfect 2-0 in singles competition, winning both contests in straight sets. In the victory over UDC, the Florida native partnered with Jean to earn a 6-3 win over the Firebirds' Lina Benjelloun and Laura Marie.
Jean won her singles match against UDC's Celia Bastin in straight sets while being victorious in the doubles play with Pegram.
Junior
Marcel Dawson (Columbus, Ga.) earned honorable mention after collecting wins in both singles and doubles competitions versus the Firebirds.
North Carolina Central junior Hugo Hildalgo Vega was named MEAC Men's Player of the Week.
Friday (March 1), the men's squad face crosstown rival Georgetown at 11:45 a.m. while the women take on Bowling Green Tuesday (March 5) in Orlando, Fla., during Spring Break.
