Three Bison Earn MEAC Postseason Recognition

Butcher named first team; Dawson and Stibbins make second team

NORFOLK, Va. (April 26, 2023) – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) unveiled its men's and women's tennis postseason honors where Howard University had a trio of Bison recognized for their outstanding performances during the 2023 spring season. The announcement came Wednesday evening.
 
Second-year Bison Sifa Butcher (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) was named to the All-MEAC First Team while fellow classmate Marcel Dawson (Columbus, Ga.) and rookie Selah Stibbins (Minneapolis) made All-MEAC Second Team.
 
Butcher won MEAC Player of the Week twice (Feb. 15 & March 29) while accumulating an 11-4 singles mark, including 4-2 in league play. The Florida native served as the club's top singles player, securing a season-best six-match win streak (March 5 to April 10).
 
Dawson took home MEAC Player of the Week on two occasions (Feb. 8 & Feb. 15) while closing the regular season with an 8-7 singles record, including 4-1 in conference play. He primarily competed in the No. 2 slot.
 
Stibbins had an incredible freshman year, winning MEAC Rookie of the Week twice (Feb. 15 & April 5) and conference Player of the Week (Feb. 8). The Minneapolis product finished her rookie campaign with a 9-6 singles mark, including 5-1 in MEAC play.
 
Morgan State junior Mikael Carpenter and South Carolina State (SCSU) junior Sofiya Chursina were named MEAC Men's and Women's Players of the Year, respectively, while SCSU's Novak Novakovic and North Carolina Central's Alejandra Hidalgo Vega was selected Men's and Women's Rookies of the Year, respectively.
 
South Carolina State's Hardeep Judge earned Coach of the Year honors for both the men and the women.
 
All voting by the conference's head coaches and sports information directors.
 
HU women open the MEAC Tournament against No. 5 Morgan State Thursday (April 27) at 8 a.m., followed by the Bison men facing No. 5 Norfolk State at 2 p.m. in Cary, N.C.
