WASHINGTON (March 31, 2023) – Howard University tennis program is set for a big weekend, playing four matches in three days (March 31-April 2).
The men's squad kicks off the weekend against rival Georgetown Friday (March 31) at Banneker Recreation Center. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
Saturday (April 1), both clubs travel to Baltimore to face Loyola (Md.) in a nonconference showdown. First serve is scheduled for noon.
The next day (April 2), HU women close out the weekend with league play at Delaware State (DSU). The contest is slated for 1 p.m.
MATCHUP PREVIEW
HOWARD WOMEN
HU women (4-9, 1-2 MEAC) enter the weekend with a two-match win streak.
The squad is led by reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week sophomore
Sifa Butcher (Pembroke Pines, Fla.). This season, the South Florida native has accumulated a 9-2 singles mark while riding a five-match win steak.
LOYOLA (MD)
Loyola women (6-10) look to keep the momentum going after sweeping Coppin State Thursday (March 30), 7-0.
Christine Richiez serves as the Greyhounds' No. 4 singles player, posting a 9-5 singles record this season.
DELAWARE STATE
DSU (7-5-1) rolls into Sunday's clash riding a three-match win streak, including back-to-back shutouts versus Coppin State (March 27), 7-0, and Bowie State (March 28), 7-0.
This year, the Lady Hornets are undefeated in Dover (4-0).
HOWARD MEN
Howard men (3-9) look to stop a three-match skid against the Hoyas and Greyhounds.
Second-year Bison
Marcel Dawson (Columbus, Ga.) enters the weekend with a team-leading five singles victories this season.
GEORGETOWN
GU (8-6) is coming off a split last weekend, edging out NJIT, 4-3, but falling at conference rival St. John's, 5-2.
Last year, the Hoyas swept HU, 4-0.
LOYOLA (MD)
Loyola men (6-9) picked up a big win over crosstown rival Coppin State Thursday (March 30), 4-3.
Matt Cardano enters as the club's top singles player with a 10-4 mark while riding a four-match win streak.
LAST TIMEOUT
On March 26, HU women secured its first road win of the season, knocking off Towson, 6-1.
The next day (March 27), the Bison men fell to Saint Joseph's, 4-0, at Banneker Recreation Center.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
On April 7, both teams square off against MEAC rival Morgan State in Baltimore. Match time starts at 4 p.m.
