NORFOLK, Va. (February 15, 2023) – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) uncovered its men's and women's tennis weekly honors where Howard University saw three Bison earn recognition for their performances over the weekend. The announcement came Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomores
Marcel Dawson (Columbus, Ga.) and
Sifa Butcher (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) won MEAC Players of the Week while newcomer
Selah Stibbins took home the league's Rookie of the Week accolade.
Dawson won his singles and doubles matches Friday (Feb. 10) against UDC. The Georgia native defeated the Firebirds' Antonio Simo Durall in straight sets (6-1, 6-2). In doubles, Dawson and junior
Justin Cadeau (West Orange, N.J.) took down UDC's top doubles team, 6-4.
Sunday (Feb. 12), Butcher also won her singles and doubles matches at Lehigh. The Florida product knocked off the Mountain Hawks' Megha Dania in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) while pairing with senior
Yemisi Ifederu (London, England) in doubles competition to win, 7-5.
In singles play, Stibbins served as the Bison's No. 3 player and won in straight sets (6-1, 6-2). She also teamed up with second-year Bison and reigning MEAC Player of the Year
Jordan Grayson (Gaithersburg, Md.) to win, 6-4, in doubles competition.
North Carolina Central's Naresh Bharathy was named Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week.
On Feb. 17, the women face John Hopkins at 3 p.m. The next day (Feb. 18), the Bison meet Villanova at 2 p.m. Both matches will take place at the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation's East Capitol Campus in Southeast D.C.
