BALTIMORE (October 8, 2023) – Howard University men's tennis team competed in the Greyhounds Classic, hosted by Loyola (Md.), where they rolled through the competition. The four-team tournament (HU, Loyola, Coppin State & Goucher) took place at the McClure Tennis Center.
First Round
In the opening round, junior
Daniel Dunac (Washington) and rookie
Kendrick Lash (Winston-Salem, N.C.) topped the Greyhounds' Jorge Quintana and Gilberto Rivera-Gordillo, 6-2. Dunac and Lash also won their respective singles matches.
Senior
Hassimiyou Dieng (Dakar, Senegal) and freshman
Mitchell Yon (Queens, N.Y.) defeated Loyola's Dylan Koziol and Trevor Girandola, 6-3. The Bison duo also won both singles contests.
Third-year Bison All-MEAC selection
Marcel Dawson (Columbus, Ga.) and newcomer
Michael Major, Jr. (Nassau, Bahamas) claimed victory against Loyola's Bennett LaLonde and Tyler Mast, 6-1. Dawson and Major also won their respective singles matches in straight sets.
Quarterfinals
Dunac and Lash rolled past the Greyhounds' Matt Cardano and Cristian Pemueller in doubles competition. In singles, Cardano defeated Dunac (6-0, 6-3), but Lash knocked off Pemueller (6-3, 6-4) and prevailed HU to the next round.
Dawson and Major outlasted Nick Lawliss and Nick Haggar in doubles play, 7-5. Both Bison advanced to the semifinal round with a pair of singles victories.
SEMIFINALS
Dunac and Lash toppled Coppin State's Vansh Kapoor and Harsh Kheterpal, 6-3. In the singles play, both Bison won in straight sets and advanced to the final round.
Dawson and Major squared off against the Greyhounds' Ryan Boland and Dylan Koziol where they won, 6-2. The Bison duo also cruised to the final round with a two singles victories.
FINALS
Due to Saturday's rain out, the all Bison final did not take place.
