Howard Women Look To Get Back On Track Against Coppin

Howard Women work to break skid

WASHINGTON -The Howard University women's basketball team will be looking to stop its current two-game losing skid when it hosts Coppin State University in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women's game at Burr Gymnasium. The game tips off at 5:30 pm and will be streamed on the HU website (www.hubison.com). Live stats will also be available.
The Bison (6-11, 2-2 in the MEAC) had deja' vu moments during Saturday's 88-55 home loss to Morgan State. Just like the previous road setback to Norfolk State a week ago, Howard stayed close early and trailed by a workable margin at the half. Then there was a repeat of a third quarter slump as Howard was outscored, 22-16, to eventually fall behind in what would prove to be an insurmountable deficit.
Howard again got an outstanding first half effort from its dynamic duo of Destiny Howell (Queens, NY) and Aziah Hudson (Massapequa, NY), who combined for 18 of the team's first 22 points en route to a 32-22 deficit.
In that past when the duo have been ineffective, Howard turned to Brooklynn Fort-Davis (Chicago, IL) and Kaniyah Harris (Capital Heights, MD), but both had less than stellar performance and without their production, the task became even more difficult.
A 6-0 senior forward from Chicago, IL, Fort-Davis, who had played well of late, never got going and ended up scoreless in 20 minutes of play.
Harris, who has served as the team's playmaker during the absence of All-MEAC senior point guard, Iyanna Warren (Accokeek, MD), also had a long night. The 5-11 junior did score five points, but she recorded only one assist and committed a season-high six turnovers. Harris came into the game averaging seven assists and only two turnovers per game the past four games. Without their second half production, the Lady Bison had no answer.
There was a bright side as freshman forward Nile Miller (Haddonfield, NJ) collected four points and grabbed a game and career-high eight boards. Sophomore forward Amirah Allen (Raleigh, NC) came off the bench and contributed three rebounds and two blocked shots in 11 minutes of play.
The Lady Bison have to have a short memory and prepare for a Coppin State team that dropped a home decision to Norfolk State on Saturday.
The Eagles (4-14, 1-2 in the MEAC), who have dropped two in a row, the most recent a 49-43 decision to Norfolk State at home this past Saturday, are led by red-shirt junior guard Mossi Staples (14.6 ppg, team leader in steals), sophomore guard Jewel Watkins (13.9 ppg, team leader in blocked shots) and redshirt sophomore guard Hope Evans  (7.7 ppg, team leader in assists).

SERIES RECORD: Howard leads the series, 49-28 and has won 12 straight, the most recent a 70-67 win at Burr last season. Coppin State's last victory over Howard goes back to 2016 when it won, 83-67 at Burr.
NEXT UP: Howard completes the current three-game home stand when it hosts North Carolina Central on Saturday, January 28 at 2 pm in Burr Gymnasium.
