COLLEGE PARK, Md. (September 26, 2021) – Howard University women's tennis team competed in the Bedford Cup at the Junior Tennis Champions Center (JTCC). The three-day event (Sept. 24-26) took place in College Park, Md.
Overall, the young Bison continue to make strides during the fall season.
"The freshmen played exceptionally well," said Howard associate head coach
Breaunna Addison. "We found success throughout the weekend in singles and doubles competition. I'm so proud of them."
In doubles, freshmen
Sifa Butcher (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and
Jordan Grayson (Gaithersburg, Md.) won Draw B after defeating fellow teammates junior
Yemisi Ifederu (London, England) and senior
Kendall Addison (Charlotte, N.C.) in the fourth round.
Newcomer
Nadia Pegram (Naples, Fla.) placed second in the singles draw after falling to Towson's Themis Haliou in a close third-set tiebreaker (4-6, 6-2, 11-9).
Rookie
Jordan Grayson (Gaithersburg, Md.) made a deep run, but ultimately finished third to finalist Haliou (6-3, 4-6, 11-9).
Throughout the weekend, the Bison faced each other several times in the tournament, including the semifinal round where Butcher took fourth after losing to Pegram in straight sets (6-2, 6-2).
Third-year Bison
Hana El Sherif (Cairo, Egypt) reached the finals in Draw F, but lost to Loyola's (Md.) Jessica Bodewes in a tight third-set tiebreaker (4-6, 6-2, 11-9).
"Overall, we're making progress," Addison continued. "We're looking to finish the fall season strong at the ITA Regionals in preparation for the 2022 spring campaign."
Next, the Bison will compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals Tournament (Oct. 1-4) at nearby Annapolis, Md.
