Tennis Begins Quest for MEAC Titles

Bison start tourney play Thursday

WASHINGTON (April 24, 2018) – Coach Larry Strickland and the Howard University Men's & Women's Tennis teams travel to Norfolk, Va. where they begin their quest for Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) titles.
 
The three-day tourney starts Thursday (April 26) and concludes Saturday (April 28). The 2018 MEAC Men's and Women's Tennis Championships will be held at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion University.
 
TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
 
Both squads enter the tourney looking to capture titles for the first time since the 1990s. Howard men are seeking their eighth championship, but first since 1990, whereas the HU women go for their sixth league crown in program history, but first since 1995.
 
For HU women (7-9, 4-2 MEAC), they come in as the No. 3 seed from the MEAC Northern Division where they will square off against the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, No. 2 seed from the MEAC Southern Division. Match time is set for 11 a.m. Thursday.
 
On the men's side, Howard (1-14, 1-3 MEAC) secured the fourth and final spot from the Northern Division by knocking off Coppin State, 4-1. As a result, the Bison clash with top-seeded South Carolina State (SCSU) from the Southern Division. The action starts Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
 
Morgan State claimed the Northern Division's top seed on the men's side. On the women's side, Hampton captured the Northern Division top seed while Florida A&M (FAMU) notched the No. 1 slot in the Southern Division.
 
A year ago, FAMU men won the 2017 MEAC Championship and enters the tourney as the No. 2 seed from the Southern Division. Last season, SCSU women won its 12th conference title in the last 13 seasons and will serve as the No. 3 seed from the Southern Division.

LAST TIMEOUT
 
Sunday (April 22), Howard women dropped its regular season finale against George Mason, 4-3, at Banneker Recreation Center. Junior Kindha Nasef and freshmen standouts Nathalie Finch and Yassmine Khiri each won their respective singles matches.
 
On April 20, HU men were shutout by Richmond, 7-0, at the Westhampton Courts.
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
 
A NCAA appearance for the Bison awaits if Howard wins the 2018 MEAC Championship titles.
