WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard women's soccer team closes its six-game road trip with two matches this weekend. The Bison will face Jackson State on Friday, Oct. 7 at 4 p.m. ET before taking on Southern on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. ET.
This will be the team's third weekend in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action. HU is 6-3-2 overall and has a 3-0-1 mark in the SWAC. The Bison are in a three-way tie for first-place in the conference with Texas Southern and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Sophomore Anna Mitchell is tied for sixth in the SWAC with nine points, while junior Kela Gray is right behind her in ninth with eight points. Junior Gabrielle Emilien has played eight games on her way to a .871 saves percentage and 0.76 goals against average. Both totals are the leading marks in league. HU leads the SWAC in shots per game (11.91) and is second in points per game (4.00).
Jackson State is on 2-8 overall with a 2-2 conference record. The Tigers were on the road last weekend where they fell to Mississippi Valley State before beating Alcorn State. When the two teams met last year, the Bison fell 4-3 to the Tigers in Greene Stadium.
Southern (1-9 overall, 1-3 SWAC) is coming off a pair of losses to ASU and MVSU last week. The Jaguars picked up their only win of the season after besting Grambling State, 5-1. Southern was blanked 2-0 by Howard when it made the trip up to nation's capital last season.
