RICHMOND, VA --- Over the weekend, the Howard women's tennis team participated in Virginia Commonwealth University 4-1 Invitational and split a pair of matches against George Mason and Norfolk State.

Both of Howard's matches finished with a score of 3-2 - a loss to George Mason in the first game and the team's first victory of the spring against NSU.

In the match against Mason, Howard lost the Doubles flight but junior Umarah Mughnee tied the match at 1-1 after GMU's Esu Erdenebat defaulted her match in the second set due to illness. GMU would take the Nos. 1 and 2 flights to earn the victory before sophomore Jessica Josiah defeated Marijke Boers in a three-set tiebreaker at No. 4 singles to set the final score.

Against NSU, Howard went into the match with an 1-0 advantage thanks to Norfolk playing shorthanded and conceding its No. 4 Singles to sophomore Ashely Garner. The Spartans would make up the deficit by taking the Doubles flight and No. 3 Singles. However, juniors Stacey Roheman and Audra took care of the top two Flights to give Howard the victory. Roheman defeated NSU's Andrea Macchiavello in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) while Bell dropped the first set but fought back won the second and earned a 10-7 win in the tiebreaker to clinch the win.
