CAYCE, SC --- Day one of the 2014 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's and Women's Tennis Championships began this morning at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center and both Howard teams - the North No. 1 Lady Bison and the North No. 4 Bison men - were in action and competing for this year's conference title.
WOMEN: #1 Howard 4, #4 North Carolina Central 2Howard jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point over NCCU. The duos of
Maame Osei &
Jessica Josiah (No.2 doubles) and
Umarah Mughnee &
Stacey Roheman (No. 3 doubles) earned the wins to give HU the point; Osei & Josiah withstood NCCU's challenge to win 8-7 (6-0) while Mughnee & Roheman won in easier fashion, 8-5.
Central rattled off wins at the No. 2 & 3 singles flights but the Lady Bison rallied by taking three of the last four flights (Nos. 1, 4 and 5) to win the match. Osei had the easiest path to victory thanks in part to a 6-2, 6-0 win at the 4th spot.
HU will advance to face South No. 2 seed South Carolina State, who also won by shutout with a 4-0 win over Delaware State.
MEN: #1 South Carolina State 4, #4 Howard 0South Carolina State, the defending MEAC tournament champions, moved on to the semifinal round of the Men's Championships with a 4-0 victory over the Bison.
Howard fell behind early after SCSU won all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. The Bulldogs also kept Howard from winning more than one game in their triumphs at Nos. 3-5 singles.
Howard finishes the season with a 2-16 overall record.
