WASHINGTON (June 26, 2025) – Howard University Department of Athletics Senior Spotlight series rolls on with another edition, featuring Maryland native
Robert Jones III (Fairwood), a two-time Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Champion from the football team. He was interviewed by senior journalism major
Sareyah Rudd.
Q: How did you first get introduced to football?
A: I always grew up playing and watching football with my cousins and friends but it was not until fifth grade that I actually joined a team and started playing.
Q: Describe the moment when you received your offer to play for Howard football.
A: I was a junior in high school and COVID-19 pandemic just started. I woke up to a call from my high school coach saying Howard was going to call and offer me. It was a huge blessing because it was my very first offer.
Q: Why Howard?
A: Among all the offers, Howard made the most sense because I had the ability to play at home and have my family close by for all the games and daily things I needed. It was a huge blessing.
Also, securing a business degree from Howard was a big reason as well.
Q: What were your initial goals when entering Howard? What are your proudest academic and athletic accomplishments?
A: My goals were to graduate, become one of the best corners in FCS football and get an NFL opportunity one day. My proudest achievements are graduating on time, winning the MEAC Championship twice, receiving MEAC Postseason honors and NFL opportunities.
Q: What change have you seen in yourself from your freshman year to now at Howard, personally and/or athletically?
A: I have grown a lot, both mentally and physically. I am a much wiser person and player, thanks to my lessons and time at Howard.
Q: Favorite all-time athlete and why?
A: My all-time favorite athlete is
Lebron James (NBA Champion) because he is The G.O.A.T (Greatest of All Time). Also, he is the ideal role model on and off the court.
Q: What kept you motivated throughout college?
A: Mainly, I was motivated by my family and the promise I always keep with myself to be the best at everything.
Q: What is your favorite Howard University memory?
A: My favorite memory is the 2023 season and competing in the Cricket Celebration Bowl in Atlanta. That was a special experience.
Q: What are your plans post-graduation?
A: My plans post-graduation is to continue chasing my goal of being a professional athlete.
Q: What advice would you give future Bison?
A: My advice to future Bison is to keep your head down, go to work every day to get better and handle everything off the field because you will be in position for a lot of opportunities you never thought would be possible.
