Football looking to keep momentum in Philly

WASHINGTON (October 8, 2026) – Howard University football team travels to Philadelphia to take on the Quakers of University of Pennsylvania from the Ivy League Saturday (Oct. 10) at 1 p.m., inside iconic Franklin Field.

Howard (2-3) is coming off a 27-13 win over Hampton Saturday (Oct. 3) in the annual Battle of the Real HU at Audi Field in D.C. The Bison snapped a three-game skid.
 
PENN
 
The Quakers (1-2) defeated Buckell in the season opener before dropping a 20-7 decision to nationally ranked Lehigh and at Ivy League opponent Dartmouth,14-10, on the road. Penn is trying to avert a three-game losing streak.
 
THE COACHES
 
Howard is coached by Ted White (Howard, '98), who is in his first season. Penn is led by Rick Santos (New Hampshire, '08), who is also in his first season at the helm.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
 
HOWARD
 
On offense, the Bison will rely on the talents of graduate running back Eden James (24 carries for 160 yards & 2 TDs), junior running back Travis Kerney (44 carries for 114 yards & a TD; 7 receptions for 34 yards and sophomore running back Billy Roberson II (28 carries for 92 yards & a TD; 5 receptions for 71 yards & a TD). Quarterback Ja'Shawn Scroggins (Las Vegas) has rushed for 116 yards on 54 carries and has completed 64-of-126 passes for 772 yards and 5 TDs. The receiving corps features senior tight end Nathanial Clark (17 receptions for 97 yards & a TD), senior wideouts Zaden Jackson (8 receptions for 118 yards) and Se'Quan Osborne (10 catches for 176 yards & a TD) and sophomore wide receiver Semaj Pierre (11 catches for 131 yards).
 
Defensively, the Buffalo Soldiers are led by graduate defensive back Kaleb Gallop (28 total tackles, a TFL & 0.5 sack), sophomore linebacker Aidan Foster (30 total tackles, 2.5 TFL, 2.5 sacks, a FR & 3 PBUs), graduate linebacker Rodney Roane (20 total tackles, 4.0 TFLs, 3.0 sacks, a FR, 3 FF, an INT & a FR), sophomore defensive back Ben Chandler IV (18 total tackles & 4 PBUs), graduate linebacker Gabe Stephens (18 total tackles, 3 QB hurries & a FR) and graduate defensive backs Kedrick Green (13 total tackles & 2 PBUs) and J. Augustus Olidge (12 total tackles & 4 PBUs).
 
Junior placekicker Matt Conord (Lithia, Fla.) leads the team scoring (24 points), including a perfect 5-for-5 on field goal attempts and 9-for-9 on PATs.
 
Penn
 
Penn is led on offense by freshman quarterback Miles Teodecki (63-of-110 for 544 yards & 2 TDs,; 63 carries for 110 yards & a TD), junior running back Donte West (34 carries for 88 yards), sophomore running back Tommy Lafayette (22 carries for 83 yards & a TD), freshman wideout Mason Paige (17 receptions for 145 yards & a TD) and sophomore wideout Luke Johnson (7 receptions for 79 yards).
 
Defensively, the Quakers are paced by junior defensive lineman Connor Martin (13 total tackles, 2.0 TFL & a sack), senior linebackers Zach Darche (30 total tackles & 1.5 TFLs) and Joey Holiday (5 total tackles, 3.0 TFL & 2.0 sacks) and junior linebacker Derek McCrum (7 total tackles, 2.0 TFLs & a FF).

HOWARD
 
The six sacks by the Buffalo Soldier defense against Hampton (Oct. 3) were a season high; the Bison came into the game with just six sacks through the first four games…Howard is a perfect 9-for-9 in the red zone this season…Howard is converting 75-percent on 4th down…On Oct. 5, Foster (Washington), who is having an all-conference season was named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week in his contributions in the win over Hampton; the sophomore linebacker from Gonzaga College High School in D.C., finished with five total tackles (four solos) and 1.5 sacks…Scroggins had an outstanding day in the win over Hampton (Oct. 3), using both his legs and arm to account for 331 yards of total offense (267 passing & 64 rushing) and a TD…Conord is also having a lot of early season success, going perfect on the season as he converted on all of his five field goal attempts and all nine PAT attempts…James (Indianapolis) has proven to be a force in the Bison running game, averaging almost seven yards per rush and has two TDs, including a career-best 75 yarder in the loss at Rutgers (Sept. 25) and regarded as one of the top rerunning backs in FCS and HBCUs…Since its season opening win over Alabama A&M (Aug. 29), who is currently 4-1 and ranked in the HBCU Top 10, Howard has faced No. 23 Richmond, No. 5 Indiana, the defending national champion, and Big Ten member Rutgers...Seven members on the HU coaching staff played in the NFL: White (Kansas City Chiefs); offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Jimmie Johnson (Washington Redskins/Philadelphia Eagles); offensive line coach Bob Whitfield (Atlanta Falcons); special teams coordinator Keith Burns (Denver Broncos/Chicago Bears/Tampa Bay Buccaneers); defensive coordinator Kyshoen Jarrett (Washington Commanders); Del Cowsette (Washington Commanders/ New York Giants/ Tampa Bay Buccaneers/Chicago Bears) and strength & conditioning coach Keith Pough (Buffalo Bills)…The back-to-back games Big Ten opponents Indiana and Rutgers marked the first time that Howard has played two Power 4 teams in the same season.
 
Penn
 
The Quakers defense is allowing only 218.7 yards of total offense through three games while holding their opponents to 21-percent on third down conversions. The Penn roster features players from all across the country, including three looms from the DMV: West is from local high school powerhouse Friendship Collegiate; senior defensive tackle Raashad Hall played his prep ball at perennial nationally ranked St. Johns's College High School in D.C. and senior defensive back Devin Malloy played at Rock Creek Christian in D.C.
