Senior Spotlight Featuring Joslyn Crosby

A deep dive into the Louisiana native’s journey

WASHINGTON (May 14, 2025) – Howard University Department of Athletics continues its senior spotlight series with a deep dive into MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Champion Joslyn Crosby (Bossier City, La.), who was interviewed by rising sophomore sports management major Joseph Butler II.

Q: What are some of your most prominent memories competing as a track and field student-athlete?
A: Some of my most prominent memories would definitely have to be during the indoor conference championships where I placed first in my three events and named MEAC Outstanding Runner.

Another more recent memory was when I was nominated and won Athlete of the Year at the Blue Carpet Awards Ceremony.

Q: When did your interest in track and field initially begin?
A: My interest in track and field initially began in middle school. Back then, I was a part of the school's soccer team and always enjoyed outrunning the opposing side. Eventually, my parents recommended giving track and field a try because of the running aspect and I felt like that would be a perfect fit for me. I tried out and made the team and have always stuck with it, even during my freshman year of high school when I had to choose between soccer and track because both sports compete in the fall. Running has always been a passion of mine and track has always been there to fulfill it.

Q: Are there any Howard traditions or team rituals that you will especially miss?
A: Of course (lol), the tradition I am going to miss mostly is our pre-race chant…"H-U! YOU KNOW". It always helped with motivating us right before a race.

Also, I will especially miss the moments whenever we would celebrate by taking photos and chanting together after winning the conference title, showing support for both the individuals and the team.

Q: Who has been the most influential person in your track and field journey at Howard and why?
A: It is impossible to just choose one person who has been influential throughout my track and field journey at Howard.

First, I would say my parents because they played a major role in getting me to this point of becoming a collegiate athlete and have shown nothing but support for me throughout these past four years.

Second, the entire coaching staff has also played a huge role in my development during my time at Howard, giving me the tools I needed to become a more competitive athlete.

Lastly, I especially want to give a shout out to my distance coach, Dameon Morgan (Howard Cross Country Head Coach), for working so hard to building our distance team and working with me on my very tight class schedules to assure I got the needed practice.

Q: How has being a student-athlete at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) shaped your overall experience and perspective?
A: Being a student-athlete at The Mecca has definitely shaped my experience in allowing me to participate and collaborate with others from a similar background like my own. It has also provided me with the opportunity to embrace many of the cultural aspects that Howard displays, causing me to accumulate a greater appreciation for HBCU tradition.

Q: What kept you motivated and how do you think your teammates would have described you?
A: What kept me motivated was my strong desire to always improve and keep myself as a reliable asset to the team and Bison family. Success has always been the team's culture and mindset and I strive to continue to nurture that culture as well.

My teammates would most likely describe me as "focused" on the track and inside the classroom.

Q: What is next for you after graduation?
A: My post-graduation plans are to start working as a registered nurse for a few years before returning to school to receive my doctorate in nursing.

Q: Any last words or advice you would like to give to future Bison?
A: "Life is always about the choices you make." What you do with your time in college is for you to decide and the decisions you make will not always be easy, but always remember the reason why you chose to come to this university.

Also, do not let anyone else put you on the wrong path to deviate from those goals you have set for yourself. Your four years are going to go by fast, so ensure that when it is your time to walk across the stage, you have absolutely no regrets for what you have made of your time at the real HU, Howard University.
