Bison looking to keep their season alive against Cougars

WASHINGTON (March 23, 2025) - Howard University women's basketball team (22-11) takes on the College of Charleston (CofC) in the second round of the Postseason Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) in Charleston, S.C. The Bison advanced to this round after a 72-62 victory over Siena College Friday (March 21) in D.C. CofC received a first-round bye.

Friday (March 21), junior forward Zennia Thomas (Cleveland) scored 13 of her game-high 19 points to lead four Bison in double figures as HU defeated Siena College, 72-62, in the first round of the Postseason WNIT in Burr Gymnasium.
 
COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON
 
The Cougars lost to Campbell, 80-59, in the semifinal round of the CAA Tournament (March 12). They were led by Taryn Barbot (26 points & eight rebounds, Jazmyn Stone (12 points) and reserve Leah Philpott (10 points).
 
WNIT APPEARANCES
 
This is the Bison's second appearance in the WNIT after losing, 65-60, to Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. (2013).
 
SERIES RECORD
 
The two teams met in 2013 and the Cougars came away with a 79-68 victory in Charleston.

Graduate guard Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) is now ninth on the all-time Howard scoring list with 1,448 points, needing 11 points to climb to the eighth all-time in program history, surpassing Shannon Carlisle (2003-08)…Howell has made 29-of-her-last-31 from the charity stripe while recording at least one three-pointer in all but two games this season...Howell is the only Howard player to start all 33 games this season…Howell has set personal career season records in assists (86), blocks (18) and steals (42)...Howell has scored 20 points or more eight times this season...Howell has reached double figures in nine straight games…Howell has recorded 31 assists in the past four games and grabbed 31 rebounds in the past seven games…freshman guard Saniyah King (Washington) was selected MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Rookie of the Year after leading the conference in assists…King has reached double figures scoring in 15-of-the-past-19 games, including a career-best 25 points versus Morgan State (Feb. 17)…King has also connected on 18-of-her-last-21 free throw attempts...junior forward Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.) has also been key to the team's success with 31 points, 23 rebounds, seven steals and seven blocks during the past four games...in that period, Thomas has come on strong over the past six games, reaching double figures in scoring while connecting on 34-of-46 shots and grabbing 49 rebounds come on strong down the stretch.…Thomas leads the team in double-doubles with five on the season...Thomas scored a career-high 27 in the MEAC Tournament Semifinal win over Maryland Eastern Shore (March 14)…Graduate forward Kaiya Creek (Seat Pleasant, Md). has chipped in with 33 points and 16 rebounds in the past four games…Sophomore guard Janyah Bohanon (Cleveland) has also proven to be a valuable asset with 21 points off the bench in the past five games.

The Cougars lead the nation in turnover margin, fourth in turnovers forced per game (23.7), seventh in steals (12.7 per game) and 30th points per game allowed…College of Charleston is averaging only 9.0 turnovers per game…Barbot was named CAA Player of the Year and first team all-defensive team…Barbot was the conference rookie of the year last season…The loss to Campbell snapped a seven-game win streak for the Cougars…College of Charleston is 13-2 at home this season.
