Track & Field Resumes Indoor Season with a Pair of Meets

Bison travel to Kentucky and New York

WASHINGTON (January 11, 2024) – Howard University men's and women's track & field program returns to action with a pair of meets: Rod McCravy Invitational (Jan. 12-13) in Lexington, Ken. and the HBCU Showcase (Jan. 13) in New York.

LAST TIMEOUT
 
On Dec. 8, both squads competed in a pair of meets to wrap up the 2023 portion: Clemson Opener, hosted by Clemson University, and the Seahawk Shootout, hosted by Wagner College.
 
WOMEN
 
In the field, second-year Bison Ija Mumford (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had a pair of victories in the long jump (5.75 meters) and triple jump (11.88 meters) at the Seahawk Shootout.
 
In South Carolina, graduate Kailei Collins (Houston) and senior Darci Khan (Stockbridge, Ga.) competed in the 60-meter dash, finishing seventh (7.59) and eighth (7.64), respectively. Khan, along with fellow classmate Kaya-Rae Dunbar (Burtonsville, Md.), made the 60-meter hurdles final, earning fourth (8.37) and eighth (8.74), respectively.
 
For her efforts, Khan was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women's Track Athlete of the Week.
 
MEN
 
In New York, juniors Kyle Fisher (Duluth, Ga.) and Sean Wray (Stafford, Va.) placed first (7.23 meters) and second (7.16 meters), respectively, in the long jump.
 
In South Carolina, rookie Jordan Good (Greensboro, N.C.) grabbed a victory in the 800-meter run at the Clemson Opener, clocking in at 1:55.49.
 
Senior Ja'Leak Perry (Atlanta) finished third overall in the 200-meter dash, producing a new personal best (21.56). For his performance, the Atlanta native received MEAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week.
 
MEET PREVIEWS
 
ROD MCCRAVY INVITE
 
The event is named in honor of Kentucky track athlete Rod McCravy, who was a very influential and caring University of Kentucky track athlete who suffered an untimely death in 1987 at the age of 19. McCravy grew up in Louisville near the site of Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center and graduated from Trinity High School. University of Kentucky Meet Manager and McCravy's college coach, Don Weber, said his former athlete continues to touch lives as the memorial meet is used to impact the next generation of athletes through McCravy's outstanding accomplishments and incredible influence both on and off the track.
 
Competing in this year's event includes Howard, Alabama State, Butler, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Miami (Ohio), Louisville, Miami (Fla.), Tulane, Ohio State and Texas.
 
HBCU SHOWCASE
 
The HBCU Showcase is a marquee event that shines a spotlight on more than 20 distinguished HBCU programs nationwide.
 
Competing programs include Howard, Bowie State University, Central State University, Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Edward Waters University, Florida Memorial University, Hampton University, Huston-Tillotson University, Johnson C. Smith University, Lincoln University, Livingstone College, Morehouse College, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina Central University, Prairie View A&M University, Saint Augustine's University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, University of the District of Columbia, Voorhees University, West Virginia State University and Winston Salem State University
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
 
On Jan. 20, HU travels to nearby Landover, Md., for the Robert Comstock Cardinal Classic, hosted by Catholic.
