WASHINGTON (September 28, 2023) - For Howard University quarterback coach
Greg McGhee, Saturday's (Sept. 30) game against Robert Morris is not just a nonconference opponent to prepare for. There is a little extra.
Â
A native of Pittsburgh and a graduate of Perry High School, McGhee admits that he has mixed emotions.
Â
"With us coming off a bad loss, it is important that we get back in the win column," said McGhee, in his first season in that position. "That has been the focus all week, but I have to admit that there is a part of me that will be excited because this will be my first time coming back home in this capacity. I have so many family and friends who will be coming out to support me."
Â
During his productive career with the Bison, McGhee set the bar both at Howard and in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). He is the all-time leader in career total offense with almost 10,000 yards and ranked Top 10 in several season and career categories.Â
Â
His honors include MEAC Rookie of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year and two-time first team All-MEAC selection.
Â
After Howard, he went on to play professionally for five years, including three years in the Canadian Football League.
Â
A no brainer future Hall of Famer, McGhee honed his coaching skills by serving as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator assistant at West Liberty University (2020-22).
Â
McGhee reflected on coaching at his alma mater and returning home.
Â
"How often does someone get the opportunity to coach at their alma mater and return home all in the same season? What a blessing!"
