WASHINGTON (June 8, 2023) -
Sekou "Koe" Murphy played for the Howard University football team while earning a degree in accounting from the School of Business in 1994. He was also members of several clubs, including the NAACP, Connecticut Club, Investment Club and Gentlemen of Drew Social Club.
After graduation, Murphy went on to become audit manager at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where he led services to many of the firm's top global, national and local clients. He would later earn his MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and then began S Murphy Holdings, an investment company focused on real estate, public/private company investments and advisory services.
Murphy was later hired as chief financial officer for several companies, leading growth strategies, cost containment initiatives and key initiatives, such as a $26 million headquarters expansion where he led the construction and financing of the project using tax credits and debt.
Currently, Murphy is the Chief Financial Officer for the National Association of Social Workers, a $60 million organization, advising the chief executive officer and the board of directors on finances, investments and tax strategies of its trade association, insurance subsidiary, political action committee, foundation and legal defense fund.
Murphy has more than 25 years of experience in structured finance, insurance, real estate, investments, healthcare and technology. For his hard work, he was awarded the 2012 SmartCXO Award for Chief Financial Officer and sits on the board of several nonprofit organizations, including Gilchrist, Maryland's leading nonprofit provider of serious illness and end-of-life care, and the Horizon Foundation, a community health foundation.
