NORFOLK, Va. (MAY 9, 2023) – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) unveiled its 2023 Softball Postseason accolades where Howard University saw five Bison acknowledged for their outstanding regular season. The announcement came Tuesday evening during the league's awards ceremony.
The postseason honors were voted by the league's softball head coaches and sports information directors.
Sophomores
Sidney Fletcher (Whittier, Calif.) and
Alyssa Vasquez (Downey, Calif.) each made the All-MEAC First Team. Graduate
Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.) received All-MEAC Second Team while second-year Bison
Lealani Ricks (Madera, Calif.) and newcomer
Amelia Weber (Montclair, Calif.) landed on the All-MEAC Third Team.
Fletcher led the league's top-hitting attack, producing a conference-best .402 batting average, which ranks top 50 in the nation. She also ranked among the MEAC leaders in OPS (1.074/2
nd), runs scored (30/3
rd) and triples (3/t-3
rd).
Vasquez and Dennis ended the regular season as two of the toughest to strikeout, ranking top 15 in the country with only four Ks apiece. Vasquez also finished first in the conference with 12 total doubles while Dennis manufactured 26 RBIs, which tied for sixth in the league.
Ricks wrapped up the regular season with 13 stolen bases, which ranks tied for sixth in the MEAC. She also finished among the league leaders in runs scored (34/2
nd) and batting average (.337/8
th).
Weber concluded its rookie campaign with a .360 hitting average, which ranks fifth in the conference. In the season finale (April 29), she hit .429 with a stolen base in the victories over Delaware State.
Morgan State's Victoria Fletcher and Anaya Hunte claimed MEAC Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year, respectively, while North Carolina Central's Makiya Graves and Cat Tarvin took home Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively.
HU begins its quest for another conference title Wednesday (May 10), taking on No. 5 Coppin State in the MEAC Tournament Opening Round. First pitch is set for 9 a.m. at NSU Softball Field.
