Women’s Basketball Extends Win Streak with Win Over UMES

Bison cruise past Hawks

WASHINGTON (February 13, 2023) – Howard University women's basketball team extended its win streak to five after Monday's 80-59 victory over Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) at Burr Gymnasium.

With the win, HU moved back to .500 (11-11) overall and 7-2 in league play. Howard has won three straight against the Hawks.

Three Bison reached double figures in scoring, led by junior guard Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) with a game-high 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including a perfect 4-of-4 from downtown.

"Overall, we shot the ball very well as a team tonight," said Howell. "I had a good shooting night and contributed on the defensive side of the ball as well."

Collectively, Howard held the Hawks to only 31-percent (18-of-58) from the floor.

UMES won the opening tip off and put the first points on the board, but Howard responded quickly with a layup from graduate forward Krislyn Marsh (Houston).

The Bison led the Hawks, 24-12, to close the first quarter, coming up big shooting 54-percent (7-of-13) from the field, including 2-of-3 from long range.

In the second period, freshman forward Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.) came off the bench and made an immediate impact, earning two steals and an assist in three minutes.

"We needed some energy because we were stagnant in the beginning," Miller stated. "We went back-and-forth early on, but once we got that big impact play, we took control."

After taking a 20-point halftime lead, 41-21, Howard came out swinging in the third with three triples from Howell and graduate guard Aziah Hudson (Massapequa, N.Y.).

The Bison quickly stretched to a 33-point lead, just five minutes into the half. During the third quarter, the Bison shot 69-percent (9-of-13), including 4-of-5 from deep.

The Hawks closed the gap to get within 20 at one point, but this was not enough to defeat the Bison.

Hudson finished with 15 points while second-year Bison Nyla Cooper (Fayetteville, N.C.) added 11 points off the bench.

Saturday (Feb. 18), the Lady Bison will take on Coppin State University at Physical Education Complex at 2 p.m.
