BALTIMORE (February 18, 2023) – Howard University women's basketball team saw its five-game win streak come to a halt after falling at Coppin State (CSU), 52-41, inside PEC Arena.
With the loss, HU dropped to 11-12 (7-3 MEAC) while the Eagles improved to 6-18 (3-6 MEAC).
Graduate guard
Aziah Hudson (Massapequa, N.Y.) led the Bison with 15 points while senior forward
Brooklynn Fort-Davis (Chicago) added eight points and eight boards in the loss.
Coppin State won the opening tip and putting the first points on the board. Third-year Bison
Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) scored HU's first points, but was unable to get into a rhythm. The conference scoring leader finished with seven points on the afternoon.
The Bison closed out the first quarter with a buzzer-beating three from junior guard
Kaniyah Harris (Capital Heights, Md.). Although the quarter proved to be a slow start, the play remained relatively even at 11 apiece.
The Bison struggled with their shots not falling early into the second quarter.
Hudson had the first points of the quarter, looking to set the tone for the Bison, but they often found themselves on the defensive side of the ball with frequent foul calling was not in favor of the Bison.
Howard had shooting woes in the first half, only 23-percent (7-of-31) from the field, including 17-percent (1-of-6) from downtown. Despite the tough shooting, the Bison only trailed by two points at halftime, 19-17.
The Eagles started the second half strong, hitting a series of back-to-back shots while extending their lead to double digits. The Bison trailed going into the fourth frame, 42-28.
With a stronger defensive presence, the Bison started to pick up momentum. The roles were slightly reversed, as the foul calling started to affect Coppin State, resulting in several free throw opportunities for the Bison. Despite the Bison's defensive efforts, it was not enough to prevent CSU from scoring down the stretch.
Sophomore
Marissa Steel (Laurel, Md.) came into the game with some fire under her belt, with back-to-back jump shots, but this was not quite enough to take over the game.
CSU snapped its 13-game skid against the Bison, dating back to the 2015-16 season. Mossi Staples had a team-leading 13 points in the win.
Howard will return to Baltimore Monday night (Feb. 20) to take on Morgan State at Hill Field House. Tipoff at 5:30 p.m.
