WASHINGTON (October 13, 2023) - In order to get to know the team a bit better, the Howard University women's basketball team sat down with its student-athletes and asked a series of questions to each class about themselves, life, their interests and more!
 
Our final newcomer to this year's squad is junior forward, Vanessa Blake! Vanessa is from Summerville, S.C., and transferred from Radford University where she averaged 8.7 points and 5.4 rebounds in 22 starts.
 
Q: What made you choose Howard?
A: I chose Howard because it was a school I would be proud to attend and earn my degree. I also love the culture on campus and in the women's basketball program.
 
Q: What has been the best part of your college experience?
A: The best part of my college experience has been meeting new people and being able to travel.
 
Q: Are there any Howard traditions or events you are excited to participate in?
A: I am excited for welcome week.
 
Q: How do you balance your social life with your academic and athletic commitments?
A: I balance everything by knowing the kind of person I am when it comes to doing schoolwork or how I may feel after a certain practice. And I make sure to write everything down and break up the days I do work.
 
Q: What's the best advice a coach has given you?
A: The best advice is to keep God first and if you put in the work, you will always get what you deserve.
 
Q: What is your favorite part about being on the Howard Women's basketball team?
A: My favorite part is spending time with the team.
 
Q: What three things would you like to accomplish in your junior year?
A: My three accomplishments would be having a career-high in points or boards, making the Dean's list and earning a spot on the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) All-Academic Team.
 
Q: Do aliens exist? Will we ever see evidence of a real alien in our lifetime? 👽
A: No (lol).
 
Q: Favorite movie of all time? 🎥
A: My favorite all-time movie is Let It Shine.
 
Q: What was your "welcome to adult life" moment?
A: When my car got towed freshman year.
 
Q: What song/artist is your guilty pleasure?
A: Pick Up Man by Joe Diffie
 
Q: Does ranch belong on spaghetti?
A: No (lol).
 
Q: Who is the funniest person on the team?
A: I would say Deuce (Iyanna Warren) on purpose, but Jen (Jenesis Perrin) not on purpose.
 
Q: How did you get into basketball?
A: An AAU team found me in high school and I just never stopped playing.
 
Q: What is your worst fear?
A: I am God fearing.
