Howard Women Look to Extend Win Streak at UMES

Bison seeking third straight victory at Hawks

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (January 8, 2023) - The Howard University women's basketball team will look to extend its win streak to three when it takes on the Hawks of University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Monday (Jan. 9) at 5:30 p.m. at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

The game will air on Facebook Live and there will be live stats available.

The Bison (5-9 overall, 1-0 in the MEAC) held off Delaware State, 51-49, in their home conference opener Saturday (Jan. 7).

Playing without two of their top three scorers, Howard still managed to hold a 20-point lead in the third quarter, mostly due to the scoring of senior forward Brooklynn Fort-Davis (Chicago), who scored a season-high 19 points and graduate guard Aziah Hudson (Massapequa, N.Y.), who scored all 15 of her points in the first half. Going into the matchup, Hudson needed just nine points to reach her 1000 career point.

The scrappy Hornets rallied and cut the deficit to two, 49-47, that is when junior guard Kaniyah Harris (Capital Heights, Md.) made some key plays down the stretch that helped the hosts survive. Harris, starting in place of two-time All-MEAC selection and DMV native senior guard Iyanna Warren (9.3 ppg), who has missed the last three games with an injury, grabbed two of her career-high 11 rebounds while also dishing out seven assists and scoring what would later turn out to be the deciding point on a pair of free throws.

The depth-challenged Bison also got a much-needed boost from freshman forward Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.), who posted seven points and seven rebounds in the victory.

SCOUTING THE HAWKS: In UMES, the Bison face a nemesis who always play them well in Princess Anne. The Hawks (4-11, 0-1 in the MEAC) dropped their conference opener in a low scoring 43-34 loss at Norfolk State.

Maryland Eastern Shore is led by Zamara Haynes (11.3 ppg, 2.5 apt and 1.7 spg), Maya Thomas (10.4 ppg), and Ja'la Bannerman (98.9 ppg).

The Hawks have dropped six of their last seven games.

MEAC NOTES: Junior guard Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) leads the MEAC in scoring (16.0 ppg) but did not play in the win over DSU … Howell's and Warren's status are unknown at present time … the Bison lead the conference in free-throw shooting at 72-percent … Harris leads the MEAC in total assists (52), including 27 in the past three games … UMES ranks third in the conference in rebounding (38.0 rpg).

SERIES RECORD: The Bison defeated the Hawks, 68-54, in last year's MEAC Tournament en route to the title … UMES holds a 19-15 advantage in the series since 2004.

NEXT UP: Howard continues its conference road trip when it takes on the Spartans of Norfolk State Saturday (Jan. 14) at 2 p.m.
