The Mount Takes Two From Softball

Bison fall twice at Mount St. Mary’s

EMITSBURG, Md. (March 5, 2022) – Howard University softball team fell twice on the road at Mount St. Mary's. HU dropped game one, 5-2, and lost the nightcap, 4-0.

GAME ONE (Howard 2, Mount St. Mary's 5)

Howard managed six hits in game one, led by freshman standout Alyssa Vasquez (Downey, Calif.) going a perfect 3-of-3 with a run scored.

Trailing, 3-0, after five innings of play, HU capitalized on a throwing error by the Mount's Bridgette Gilliano and closed the gap to within two, 3-1.

Bottom six, Gilliano redeemed herself with a two-run double down the left field line and extended the lead to four, 5-1.

Top seven, Howard rallied with an RBI-single from sophomore Ari Whatley (Chattanooga, Tenn.), but the comeback would fall short.

Newcomer Mia Gonzales (Atwater, Calif.) had a solid outing for the Bison, going 4.1 innings with four strikeouts.

GAME TWO (Howard 0, Mount St. Mary's 4)

Like game one, HU produced six hits, but were unable to get any Bison to cross home. Senior Xzarria Simmons (Escondido, Calif.) got into a rhythm, batting a perfect 3-of-3 in the loss.

After four scoreless innings, The Mount exploded for four runs in the fifth, highlighted by a RBI-double from Zoe Truxon. The fifth frame would be the difference.

Despite allowing four runs (two earned), graduate pitcher Analise De La Roca (San Pedro, Calif.) tossed five scoreless innings while striking out three batters in the loss.
