Softball Falls Short Versus The Mount

Mount St. Mary’s completes weekend sweep over the Bison

WASHINGTON (March 6, 2022) – Howard University softball team fall short in Sunday's series finale versus Mount St. Mary's (MSM), 8-5, at Washington Nationals Youth Academy. With the setback, MSM swept the three-game weekend series, 3-0.

HU (5-12) produced five runs on 11 hits with four Bison recording multi-hit performances. Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year Camille Navarro (Los Angeles) led the attack, going 2-of-3 with three runs scored.

After two, both clubs were deadlocked at one apiece until Navarro scored on a fielder's choice by rookie Victoria Brown (Carson, Calif.), 2-1.

Top four, Mount St. Mary's capitalized on a Bison error and regained the upper hand, thanks to four unearned runs, capped off by a three-run shot by Abigayle Perry, 5-2.

Next inning, The Mount added two more runs to extend the lead, 7-2, but HU fought back and registered pair of RBI-singles from senior Xzarria Simmons (Escondido, Calif.) and third-year Bison Raye Thomas (Washington) to cut the margin to three, 7-4.

In the sixth, MSM scored another run, 8-5, but freshman standout Alyssa Vasquez (Downey, Calif.) delivered an RBI-single to right center and kept the deficit to three going into the seventh, 8-5.

HU was unable to get base runners in the final frame, thanks to The Mount's Avery Neuhart sitting down the Bison in order.

Simmons finished afternoon, batting 2-of-4 with two RBIs while Vasquez and fellow classmate Lealani Ricks (Madera, Calif.) also had two hits in a losing effort.

In the circle, senior Sydney Hixenbaugh (Millstone, N.J.) entered in a reserve role, going 3.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts in the loss.

For MSM (5-9), Amanda Berkley secured their third win of the season after tossing three innings with three strikeouts.

Friday (March 11), Howard welcomes Saint Peter's to The District for a nonconference doubleheader. The action starts at noon.
