WASHINGTON (March 22, 2022) – Howard University softball team continues its homestand Wednesday (March 23) and Thursday (March 24) in a pair of nonconference matchups at Washington Nationals Youth Academy.
On March 23, the Bison host Siena in a doubleheader, beginning at noon. The following day, HU squares off against Hofstra in a single, seven-inning contest. First-pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
MATCHUP PREVIEWS
HOWARD
HU (9-16) looks to get back on track before resuming conference play versus Coppin State (March 26-27). Entering the week, Howard leads the league in batting average (.292).
Freshmen
Victoria Brown (Carson, Calif.) and
Alyssa Vasquez (Downey, Calif.) provide the one-two punch for HU, leading the league in hitting at .391 and .389, respectively.
SIENA
Before taking on HU, Siena (4-8) faces Morgan State Tuesday in a doubleheader. Last weekend, Siena (4-8) competed in the Madeira Beach Invitational II where they went 2-4 in the tournament.
Ava Fitzmaurice leads the Saints, posting a .342 batting average with five runs scored, four doubles and a pair of RBIs. Fitzmaurice also pitches with a 2-3 mark on the season.
HOFSTRA
Before squaring off against the Bison, Hofstra (5-15) takes on Stoney Brook (March 22) and LIU (March 23).
Chelsea Manto spearheads the Pride, producing a .362 hitting percentage with four runs scored, three RBIs and three walks. Haley Venturini leads the pitching staff with a 2.81 ERA and 38 strikeouts.
LAST TIMEOUT
On March 18-19, the Bison dropped two-out-of-three versus Norfolk State (NSU).
Saturday (March 18), graduate pitcher
Analise De La Roca (San Pedro, Calif.) tossed a no-hitter in the game two victory over NSU, 9-1, securing a split on the first day of league play. HU dropped the first contest, 12-5.
The next day (March 19), Howard dropped its rubber match against the Spartans, 16-5, at Washington Nationals Youth Academy in southeast D.C.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
On March 26-27, Howard wraps up its homestand against conference rival Coppin State. Saturday's (March 26) doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. and Sunday (March 27) single, seven-inning game starts at noon.
