Softball Sweeps Bulldogs

Bison get back in the win column

WASHINGTON (March 2, 2022) – Howard University softball team got back in the win column, sweeping Bowie State (BSU) in a midweek twinbill. HU won game one, 12-0 (f/5), and then followed up with a 9-1 (f/5) victory in the nightcap.
 
GAME ONE (Howard 12, Bowie State 0 [f/5])
 
Howard pounded out 13 hits in game one, led by Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Preseason Player of the Year senior Camille Navarro (Los Angeles) going 3-of-4 with three runs scored.
 
HU tallied three runs in the opening frame, capped off by a two-run triple from Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.), 3-0.
 
Next inning, the Bison added four more runs, highlighted by Dennis' two-run blast over the left center fence, 7-0.
 
Bottom three, Howard produced three additional runs, capped off by a two-run single from newcomer Victoria Brown (Carson, Calif.), 11-0.
 
In the fourth inning, senior Maxie Harrington (Vacaville, Calif.)  drilled a shot to right field that turned into a rare inside-the-park homer, 12-0.
 
Dennis drove in four runs while crossing home three times in the win.
 
In the circle, the pitching staff combined to allow only one hit. Graduate Analise De La Roca (San Pedro, Calif.) earned her second win of the season, tossing three innings and three strikeouts.
 
GAME TWO (Howard 9, Bowie State 1 [f/5])
 
HU registered nine runs on 13 hits, led by Navarro going a perfect 4-of-4 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
 
Howard jumped out to a quick 4-0 advantage after one inning of play.
 
After a solo shot from Bowie State's Brean Harvey, 4-1, the Bison added two more runs and extended the margin after four, 6-1.
 
Next inning, Howard tallied three runs, highlighted by Navarro's two-run single to end the game in five, 9-1.
 
Dennis and freshman Lealani Ricks (Madera, Calif.) recorded two hits each in the victory.
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
 
On March 5-6, Howard takes on Mount St. Mary's in a three-game series. Saturday (March 5), HU goes to Emmitsburg, Md., for a doubleheader, starting at noon. Sunday's seven-inning contest will take place at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy. First pitch at 1 p.m.
