WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Howard University women's basketball finally returns to Burr Gymnasium after spending the month of January on the road. The Bison is set to face the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Eagles for a 2 p.m. tipoff on Saturday, February 5.
Covid-19 being a menace during the holiday break, caused several cancelations, postponements, and schedule reshuffling put the Bison on the road for the whole month of January. Howard went 6-1 in January, their only loss was to Morgan State, and they won against Frostburg, UMES, NCCU, and SCSU.
Game Notes
Howard sits in second place in the MEAC standings at 4-1 and 10-7 overall. Norfolk St. currently has a one-game lead over the Bison.
Anzhane' Hutton [11.7 ppg] and Destiny Howell [11.8] ranked sixth and seventh in scoring in the league. Hutton's 8.1 rebounds per game lead the league; Kryslin Marsh sits in ninth place with 6.1 rebounds per game. Iyanna Warren's 81 total assists and 4.8 assists per game lead the MEAC.
The Bison and the Hawks opened up conference play on January 17, the Bison defeated UMES 67-52 to open conference play in Hytche Arena. Destiny Howell recorded a game-high 20 points, her third 20 point output of the season. Anzhane' Hutton (11) and Iyanna Warren (14) joined Howell in double-figure scoring. The Bison physicality put Howard at the charity stripe 32 times, connecting 23 times for a 71.9 free throw percentage. Howard out rebounded UMES 42-38. The Bison led for 36:49. Howard also recorded 16 points off of turnovers and 13 second-chance points. .
Howard leads the all-time series 62-22.
Covid Protocol:
Guests age 12 and older must provide proof of having received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by January 15, 2022 to enter. For those taking a two-dose vaccine, Pfizer or Moderna, proof of a second dose will be required for entry beginning February 15, 2022.
A CDC-issued vaccination card along with photo ID for guests ages 18 or older (Original card, Photocopy of card, or Digital copy or photo).
Masks are still required in addition to the vaccination policy for all guests older than 2 years of age. Masks must be worn covering your nose and mouth while you are inside Burr Gymnasium with the exception of actively drinking in your seat. Masks cannot be gaiters, handkerchiefs, bandanas, costume masks, masks made of mesh material or a covering with an exhalation valve or holes.
All Howard Students will be admitted upon the presentation of their Bison Safe App.
About the Bison
- Head Coach Ty Grace won her 155th game as a head coach versus Frostburg St. and is six games from reaching the 100 win game mark as a Bison.
- The 2020-21 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division Champions fell in the finals of the 2021 conference tournament. However, the Bison took the league by storm last season. Despite the pandemic, Howard went 10-2 in conference play and 15-4, with non-conference wins versus LaSalle, George Washington, Mount Saint Mary's, and Richmond.
- The Bison were selected No. 1 in the MEAC Preseason Poll by the league's coaches and media relations personnel.
- Three Bison was named the Preseason All-MEAC Team, Anzhane' Hutton, Kaiya Creek, and Iyanna Warren.
- Howard head coach Ty Grace enters her seventh season at the helm, named 2020-21 MEAC Coach of the Year.
- The Bison only lost one starter from last season's team.
- Last season, Howard posted the best regular-season winning percentage (.823) in school history. In addition, the Bison's defense ranked sixth nationally in field-goal percentage defense (33.9) and three-point field goal defense (25.6). Howard's 28.9 defensive rebounds ranked 30th in the NCAA led by 2020-21 Rookie of the Year Anzhane' Hutton. Hutton was also named to the All-MEAC second team, All-Rookie, and All-Defensive team.

Howard's Destiny Howell knocked down a shot from beyond the arc that sparked a 9-0 fourth-quarter run to complete the comeback and defeat of the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina St. 67-59, Monday night in S.H.M. Memorial Gym.
S.C. State Nadia Reese gave the Lady Bulldogs their largest lead [14] of the game with 2:09 left in the third quarter. Then, the Bison caught fire, ending the quarter 5-0 run cutting the lead, 51-42.
Howard continued their momentum into the fourth quarter recording a 13-4 run in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, cemented by a Nyla Cooper three-point shot cutting the lead, 57-56. The Bison and Bulldogs traded basket when Destiny Howell knocked down her fourth three-pointer to capture a 61-59 lead with 2:10 left in regulation. Howard held South Carolina State scoreless the rest of the way and knocked down six consecutive free-throw to close out the game and escape with a 67-59 victory.
Destiny Howell paced the Bison, recording 16 points (6-of-14 from the floor], Anzhane' Hutton knocked in seven free throws, also joined Howell in double figures recording 13 points, 12 rebounds, her fourth double-double of the season, and three blocks. Brooklynn Fort-Davis recorded 12 rebounds, ten defensive, and nine points.
About UMES
UMES opened MEAC play 1-4, and lost both contests last weekend.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore dug themselves an early hole on Monday night at home against Morgan State, heading into the half down 35-21 in a highly physical game and were never quite able to battle back.
The Hawks (5-12, 1-4 MEAC) put up a 21-point third quarter and cut the Bears' lead to nine (46-55) with 8:15 to go in the fourth, but that was the closest they would get, eventually falling 72-60.
Seven players have seen action in all 17 contests this season, 12 players have seen actions in more than 11 games. Amanda Carney leads the Hawks in scoring averaging 7.8 points per game.

The Bison travels to Delaware State Hornets for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 8 and was postponed due to Covid-19.
