PITTSBURGH PA - Howard University women's basketball hopes to get out of the throes of a three-game losing streak when it takes on Duquesne University on Wednesday at 11am in the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and there will be live stats.
The Bison (3-8) dropped a 65-54 home contest to North Texas in Burr Gymnasium on Sunday. The problem for Howard during this slide has been the ability to get a third and fourth scorer and long stretches when they cannot score.
In the North Texas game, junior guard
Destiny Howell did her usual, leading the Bison with 21 points. Graduate guard
Aziah Hudson, who has been consistent all season, chipped in with 12, but there was no one else to pick up the slack. Senior guard
Iyanna Warren, the team's second leading scorer who has been in a slight slump of late, scored only two-free throws off the bench during nine minutes of play, almost 10 under her average.
Adding to their woes, the Bison bench managed only seven points and it was especially crucial during the third quarter when Howard scored only four points.
Howard will need players like senior forward
Brooklynn Fort-Davis (7.4 ppg, 5.7 rpg), junior guard
Kaniyah Harris (3.5 ppg, 4.6 rpg), senior forward
Krislyn Marsh (5.3 ppg, 3.0 rpg) and junior guard/forward
Kaiya Creek (4.3 ppg, 3.6 rpg) to contribute.
The task does not get any easier. Duquesne (9-3) comes into the game having won four of their last five, the latest an 87-60 win over Cornell on Monday.
The Dukes are led by sophomore guard Tess Myers (13.8 ppg), junior forward Ayanna Townsend (12.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg), junior guard Precious Johnson (11.3 ppg, 6.87 rpg) and Meagan McConnell (10.3 points, 6.1 apg).
"We have to show up, compete and produce; we just aren't playing great basketball right now," said Howard Head Coach
Ty Grace. "Duquesne is another big challenge for us but it is up to us to get through these challenges, to get better, and we will."
SERIES RECORD: Duquesne defeated Howard, 86-62, the last time they met in Pittsburgh in 2014 to lead the series, 2-0.
NEXT UP: Howard travels to Richmond, VA to take on VCU on Wednesday, December 28 at 6 pm. The game will air live on ESPN+.
