NORFOLK, Va. (October 20, 2022) – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) uncovered its women's basketball preseason honors and predicted order of finish where Howard University was tabbed to repeat as conference champions. The announcement came Thursday during the league's annual virtual teleconference.
HU tallied 119 points, including eight first-place votes, voted on by the conference's head coaches and sports information directors. Last season, Howard registered its fourth consecutive winning season (21-10, 11-3 MEAC) and first MEAC Tournament title since 2001.
Additionally, four Bison received MEAC Preseason honors:
Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.);
Iyanna Warren (Accokeek, Md.);
Brooklynn Fort-Davis (Chicago) and
Krislyn Marsh (Houston).
Howell was selected to the All-MEAC Preseason First Team after earning tournament outstanding player a year ago. Last season, the New York native played all 31 contests (26 starts) while ranking among the league's top scoring threats (12.5 ppg/5
th).
This season, Warren joins Howell on the All-MEAC Preseason First Team. A year ago, the two-time All-MEAC selection competed in 27 games (26 starts) and led the conference in total assists (110) and assists per game (4.1).
Fort-Davis, All-MEAC Preseason Third Team selection, played all 31 games a year ago, including 21 starts. Last season, the Chicago product finished with four double-doubles while ranking among the conference leaders in rebounds per game (6.5 rpg/7
th) and field goal percentage (.416/6
th).
Marsh earned a spot on the All-MEAC Preseason Third Team after leading the league in field goal percentage (.520) a year ago. Last season, the Houston native produced three double-doubles, including 16 rebounds and 14 points in the win over Incarnate Word during the NCAA Tournament First Four Round (March 16).
Coppin State graduate guard Jaia Alexander was named the MEAC Preseason Player of the Year, presented by TowneBank.
All awards were voted on by the conference's head coaches and sports information directors.
On Nov. 7, Howard opens the new season with LaSalle. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. inside The Burr.
