WBB: Bison Concludes November Road Swing in Towson

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Howard University women's basketball team is set to conclude their November road swing versus CAA foe Towson University Tigers on Saturday, Nov. 27 in SECU Arena for a 2 pm tipoff on FloHoops.

Game Notes

  • Tuesday matchup is the 9th game in the series. Howard leads the series 6-2. 
  • The Bison defeated 81-70 during the 1999-2000 season. 
  • Head Coach Ty Grace will face Towson for the first time.
  • The last Tigers win came in 1983. 
  • Howard looks to keep streaking. The Bison won back-to-back games for the first time this season after defeating Mount St. Mary's 56-49. 

About the Bison

  •  The 2020-21 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division Champions fell in the finals of the 2021 conference tournament. However, the Bison took the league by storm last season. Despite the pandemic, Howard went 10-2 in conference play and 15-4, with non-conference wins versus LaSalle, George Washington, Mt. Saint Mary's, and Richmond. 
  • The Bison were selected No. 1 in the MEAC Preseason Poll.
  • Three Bison was named the Preseason All-MEAC Team, Anzhane' HuttonKaiya Creek, and Iyanna Warren.
  • Howard head coach Ty Grace enters her seventh season at the helm, named 2020-21 MEAC Coach of the Year. 
  • The Bison only lost one starter from last season's team. 
  • Howard posted the best regular-season winning percentage (.823) in school history last season. In addition, the Bison's defense ranked sixth nationally in field-goal percentage defense (33.9) and three-point field goal defense (25.6). Howard's 28.9 defensive rebounds ranked 30th in the NCAA led by 2020-21 Rookie of the Year Anzhane' Hutton. Hutton was also named to the All-MEAC second team, All-Rookie, and All-Defensive team.

Howard University women's basketball team dominated the first half, holding on to defeat Mount St. Mary's, 56-49, Tuesday night in Knott Arena.

The Mount took a 3-0 lead early with a long three, but the Bison responded with a 14-2 run over the next seven minutes. Iyanna Warren [Accokeek, Md.] spearheaded the Bison run with a jumper from the free-throw line. Howard then took a 4-3 lead on a Gia Thorpe [Pittsburgh] lay-up. Warren sank another jumper to extend the Bison lead, but the Mount responded with a driving lay-up to cut the lead, 6-5, with 4:49 left in the first quarter. Krislyn Marsh [Houston] got in on the action with a lay-up, giving Howard an 8-5 cushion and sparking an 8-0 run to close the first quarter. The Bison defense held the Mount to 0-for-3 from the floor and forced four turnovers in the three-minute span. Howard shot 3-of-4 from the floor and recorded three steals. 

The Bison carried the momentum into the second quarter, recording a 13-4 run to extend the lead, 27-9. Howard cruised into halftime, leading 31-14. 

Mount St. Mary's came within four points after making a three-point shot with nine minutes remaining in regulation. However, that would be the closest the Mount would get as the Bison would hold Mount St. Mary's at bay trading baskets the rest of the way, defeating the Mount 56-49.  

About the Tigers

Towson defeated Millersville Tuesday night, 95-46, to improve to 4-1 on the season. Five Tigers ended in double-digits led by Allie Kubek and Tarriyonna Gary with 14 points apiece, followed by Aleah Nelson, Rayne Tucker, and Mariah Wilson with 12 points each. All 11 student-athletes that dressed scored at least two points in the affair.

  

Narrie Dodson set a new career-high with 11 rebounds to lead the team off the glass. 

With 18 total steals, Towson scored 38 points off 28 turnovers, picked up 39 fast breakpoints. 

Aleah Nelson leads the Tigers' offense, recording 20 points a game and 6.6 assists per game. 

Nelson scored a career-high 39 points in an 87-70 upset win over SEC foe Florida.

This season, the Bison comes home for the first time on Dec. 1, versus Loyola [MD] for a 6 pm tipoff in Burr Gymnasium.
