Women’s Basketball Begins Road Swing in the Sunshine State

Bison meet Florida A&M Saturday; HU squares off against Bethune-Cookman Monday night

WASHINGTON (February 7, 2020) – Howard University women's basketball team begins its five-game road swing in the Sunshine State where Florida A&M (Feb. 8) and Bethune-Cookman (Feb. 10) await. Saturday's tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. while Monday's showdown starts at 5:30 p.m.

MATCHUP PREVIEWS
 
HOWARD
 
HU (13-9, 5-4 MEAC) arrives sitting sixth in the league standings. After starting conference play 2-3, the Bison have won three-of-their-last four contests. This season, Howard is 7-3 in true road games.
 
Guards Ayonna Williams (Washington) and Jayla Thornton (Newark, N.J.) pace HU, combining for nearly 28 ppg.
 
FLORIDA A&M
 
Florida A&M (4-16, 2-7 MEAC) has dropped four-in-a-row, including a 72-58 loss at the hands of HU, back on Jan. 25.
 
Offensively, Alaina Rice is the lone Rattler in double figures, scoring 10.9 points per game.
 
BETHUNE-COOKMAN
 
After opening league play with a road loss at Norfolk State, 51-61, the Wildcats (15-5, 7-1 MEAC) have won seven straight contests, including a victory over HU, 59-75, back on Jan. 6.
 
Entering the weekend, Bethune-Cookman is the only squad in the league to rank top 3 in scoring offense (67.2 ppg/3rd) and scoring defense (57.6 ppg /2nd). Amaya Scott leads the club with 12.4 ppg, followed by Daniella Hatcher (11.1 ppg).
 
LAST TIMEOUT
 
On Feb. 1, the team was defeated by the Morgan State Bears, 52-68. Williams and sophomore Gia Thorpe (Pittsburgh) matched each other with 12 points while Thornton contributed 11.
 
Monday's (Feb. 3), the Bison knocked off Coppin State, 64-52. Thorpe impressed with a career-high 18 points, eight rebounds, and two steals. Williams was honored for making the 1,000-point club, and then proceeded to show her gratitude by scoring 13 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and three steals. Sophomore Krislyn Marsh (Duncanville, Texas) also made waves with 11 points, seven rebounds, and a career-high four blocks.
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
 
Howard returns to the hardwood Saturday (Feb. 22) and Monday (Feb. 24) when they travel down to the Tar Heel state to face North Carolina A&T State and North Carolina Central.
