Women’s Basketball Looks to Bounce Back Against Richmond

Bison face another A-10 foe before the holiday break

WASHINGTON (December 21, 2020) – Howard University women's basketball team looks to bounce back Tuesday (Dec. 22) when they host Atlantic 10 foe Richmond inside The Burr. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.

ALL-TIME SERIES
 
Both squads square off for the first time since 1992. Tuesday's showdown will be the sixth meeting between HU and Richmond with the Spiders winning the previous five meetings.
 
HOWARD
 
HU (3-1) suffered their first loss of the season at Longwood, 78-89. Despite the setback, Howard looks poise to bounce back with another win over an A-10 opponent. This season, the Bison have a pair of back-to-back comeback victories over La Salle (Dec. 11), 75-72, and George Washington (Dec. 13), 63-53.
 
Senior Jayla Thornton (Newark, N.J.) and freshman Kaiya Creek (Seat Pleasant, Md.) lead the squad in scoring, averaging 14.3 points apiece. Newcomer Anzhane' Hutton (Cedar Hill, Texas) provides the low-post presence with 12.8 ppg and 9.3 rpg.
 
Sophomore point guard Iyanna Warren (Accokeek, Md.) orchestrates the league's top scoring attack, posting 6.2 assist per game, which ranks 12th nationally.
 
RICHMOND
 
Richmond (3-2) enters Tuesday's clash looking to get back in the win column after dropping a 49-73 decision versus crosstown rival VCU. With the loss, the Spiders saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.
 
Four Spiders average double figures, led by Kate Kilimkiewicz with 15.8 points. Claire Holt chips in 12.8 points per game on 53-percent (20-of-38) shooting while Addie Budnik and Siobhan Ryan adds 11.2 ppg and 9.6 ppg, respectively.
 
Defensively, Budnik ranks among the nation's top shot blockers with three rejections per game, which sits eighth overall.
 
LAST TIMEOUT
 
Saturday (Dec. 19), the Bison suffered their first setback of the season after a 78-89 loss at Longwood.
 
Four Bison reached double figures in scoring, led by freshman guard Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) with 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting from downtown.
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
 
HU returns to action after the holiday break for league play. Howard opens the year in Baltimore to face Morgan State (Jan. 2-3). Both days are scheduled for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
