WASHINGTON (January 25, 2019) -- The Howard University women's basketball team return home on Saturday to face the Delaware State Hornets. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Burr Gymnasium.
LAST TIMEOUT
The Bison dropped their last game on the road to South Carolina State, 72-63, falling to a 10-8 overall record on the season. Despite leading by four after the first quarter, shooting woes prevented Howard from winning its third consecutive game. The Bison shot just .400 from the free throw line and struggled from long range, going just 1-19 from beyond the arc.
Howard women's basketball coach
Ty Grace commented on the defeat saying, "Saturday's loss was reflective of a lack of focus at the foul line and missing easy lay-ups. I know we'll make the adjustment and take care of those things this Saturday."
Freshman forward
Krislyn Marsh and junior guard
Ayonna Williams led the offense for the Bison, combining to score 31 points in the loss.
GAME PREVIEW
The Bison will face the Hornets for the first time this season, with both teams coming off a loss in their previous game. Howard hoists the advantage in the MEAC standings, with a 3-2 record in conference play, compared to Delaware State's 1-5 record.
In comparing the two teams, Howard leads the MEAC in scoring, averaging 69.8 points per game in conference play, compared to 55.3 points for Delaware State. The Bison also hold their opponents to lower scoring, allowing just 63.2 points per contest, compared to 64.3 points for the Hornets.
Despite their struggles in conference play, the Hornets have conference's top scorer in senior forward Najai Pollard. Pollard averages 22.4 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. In speaking on the preparation to contain Pollard, Coach Grace said, "We recognize her strengths and ability to score. We will pay attention to her and try to limit her shots and impact on the offensive glass."
PROMOTIONS
Women's basketball will host Alumni Day on Saturday. The day will begin at 9 a.m. with a shootaround, followed by the game and conclude with a mixer. The team will honor former player Saadia Doyle before the start of the game. Doyle is the reigning MEAC conference record holder for career scoring.
