NORFOLK, Va. (September 24, 2018) – After outlasting Bethune-Cookman (B-CU) in the 35
th annual Circle City Classic, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced its football weekly honors where four Howard University student-athletes were acknowledged for their tremendous efforts. The announcement came Monday.
Among the recipients were graduate student center
James Holmon (MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Week), sophomore quarterback
Caylin Newton (MEAC Offensive Player of the Week) and freshmen
Josiah Crute (MEAC Rookie of the Week) and
Jalen Smith (MEAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week).
Holmon (Augusta, Ga.) and the Bison OL powered HU's balance attack while helping the squad convert 55-percent (11-of-20) on third and fourth downs. Overall, Howard posted 526 total yards (301 passing yards and 225 rushing yards).
Saturday (Sept. 22), Newton (Atlanta) recorded his third career 300-yard passing game while tossing his sixth contest of two or more TDs. Second-year quarterback threw for 301 yards (20-of-32) with two passing touchdowns in the victory over Bethune-Cookman.
Crute (Washington, D.C.) led the ground attack for HU, posting a career-high 83 yards on 11 carries with a pair of touchdowns. After intermission, the D.C. native put Howard back on top, thanks to a 31-yard TD up-the-middle.
Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) played a significant role for the Bison defense, holding the Wildcats to 33-percent (4-of-12) on third down. The Virginia product returned his first interception for a touchdown and extended HU's lead to double-digits, 28-14, late into the third quarter.
B-CU's Jimmie Robinson was selected MEAC Specialist of the Week while Norfolk State's Nhyre' Quinerly claimed the other half of the MEAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week.

After the bye week (Oct. 6), Howard hits the road to Durham, N.C. where the North Carolina Central Eagles await. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
