Football Set to Compete in the Annual HBCU NYC Classic

Bison square off against Morehouse College

WASHINGTON (September 12, 2025) – Howard University football team heads to East Rutherford, N.J., to compete in the annual HBCU NYC Classic Saturday (Sept. 13), facing Morehouse College (MC) at MetLife Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.

Howard is coached by Larry Scott (South Florida, '00), who is in his fifth season, and Morehouse is led by Terance Mathis (New Mexico, '90), who is in his second season.

LAST TIMEOUT
 
On Sept.6, Howard (1-1) is coming off a 55-7 loss at Temple. Morehouse (0-1) dropped its season opener, 45-9, to Johnson C. Smith in the Essence HBCU Classic (Aug. 30) at Harvard Stadium.
 
SERIES RECORD
 
The Bison won last year's game (Sept. 14, 2024), 35-21, and have now reeled off seven straight to lead the series, 28-10-2, since 1923.

The Bison are led on offense by graduate quarterback Tyriq Starks (19 carries for 50 yards; 24-of-42 for 179 passing yards & 2 TDs), sophomore running back Travis Kerney (19 carries for 45 yards), senior running back Eden James (11 carries for 33 yards; 4 receptions for 17 yards), freshman wide receiver CJ Neely (4 receptions for 27 yards & a TD) and sophomore tight end KD Mosley (4 receptions for 34 yards & a TD).
 
Defensively, senior linebacker Cam Dyson (12 total tackles [5 solos]), sophomore linebacker Ja'Quavion Smith (7 total tackles [3 solos]) and redshirt freshman defensive back Zuri Watson (9 total tackles [6 solos] & a TFL), CJ Wesley (10 total tackles [6 solos], 2 sacks & a FF), Kaleb Gallop (9 total tackles [6 solos] & a TFL) and Noah Miles (9 total tackles [7 solos] & 2 sacks) lead the way.
 
GAME NOTES

This is the third game for Howard in a pro football facility…Last week's game (Sept. 6) was played at Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles…The opening week (Aug. 30), the Bison played FAMU (Florida A&M) in Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins…Saturday's game (Sept. 13) is at MetLife Stadium, home of the New York Giants and New York Jets…In a rare twist, Howard will play an FCS, FBS and a Division II opponents in first three games...sophomore kicker Matt Conord (Lithia, Fla.) was named the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Specialist of the Week for his efforts in the win over FAMU…Conord came into the game having converted on only 4-of-11 field goals with the longest, 32 yards, last year as a freshman at Chowan…The game winner was not only the longest of his career, but his first game winner…On Sept. 8, Wesley was selected MEAC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts at Temple.
 
MOREHOUSE
 
In the loss to Johnson C. Smith, Morehouse was penalized 16 times for 108 yards and the Maroon Tigers allowed 512 total offensive yards.
 
NEXT UP
 
The Bison finally play within the confines of Washington, D.C., when they take on rival Hampton University in the annual P&G Truth &Service Classic, presented by EventsDC Saturday (Sept. 20) at Audi Field. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
 
The Maroon Tigers host Kentucky State in their home opener Saturday (Sept. 20).
