WASHINGTON (September 1, 2018) – Senior
Tariq Fullerton (Kingston, Jamaica) and sophomore
Destiny Stanford (Woolwhich Township, N.J.) led the Howard University Men's & Women's Cross Country teams in the Labor Day Classic.
Both Bison placed first overall in their respective races.
"Seeing
Destiny Stanford pick up the overall win is a statement of things to come after a record breaking freshman year," said Howard Director of Track & Field
David Oliver. "This was Tariq's [Fullerton] first cross country race in nearly three years. For him to come out and get the overall win is going to set him up for a great senior campaign. [I'm] really excited for this year!"
On the men's side, seven Bison finished in the top 10, led by Fullerton with a 16:20.51 mark. Freshmen
Gavin Williams (Dover, Del.) came in second, clocking in at 16:30.49.
Ayoade Adebiyi (Virginia Beach, Va.),
Anthony Gordon (Clinton, Md.) and
Humberto Gonzalez (Perris, Calif.) took fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, while
Aaron Coates (Washington) and
Matthew Marchbanks (Chicago) rounded out the top 10.
For the women, Stanford won with a victory time of 20:00.45. Newcomers
Melanie White (Orlando, Fla.) and
Essence Baker (South Brunswick, N.J.) also posted top 10 finishes, placing fourth and sixth, respectively.
Before the match, Director Oliver and the program recognized track alum stretching from 1980 to 2016.
"It's was amazing being able to host a home competition for the first time in 23-plus years," Oliver commented. "Having our current squad be able to converse with track alums that stretched from 1980 to 2016 is a real program building moment."
Saturday (Sept. 8), Howard goes to New Market, Va. for the James Madison Invitational. Meet starts 10 a.m.
