Volleyball Goes West For Fullerton Classic

Bison’s first true road test of the season

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After four consecutive matches in our Nation's Capital, the Howard Volleyball team begins its first true road test of the season in Los Angeles for the Fullerton Classic.

Tomorrow (Sept. 1), HU opens the tourney with Southern Utah at 3 p.m. (ET). The next day (Sept. 2), Howard concludes the event against San Jose State and UC-Riverside. Match times are 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. (ET), respectively.

LAST TIMEOUT
 
Last Monday (Aug. 28), the Bison dropped its nonconference matchup against Pac-12 foe Washington State in four sets (22-25, 25-18, 16-25, 21-25).
 
After losing the first set, 22-25, HU rebounded and won game two, 25-18. Howard battled, but fell in sets three and four.
 
TOP PERFORMANCES
 
Junior setter Tamia Dockery registered a double-double, posting 31 dimes and 16 digs in the loss.
 
Jessica Young recorded a team-best 11 kills while Khaila Donaldson registered 13 digs and eight kills in a losing effort.
 
MATCHUP PREVIEW
 
Southern Utah (1-4) comes in dropping its first four-out-of-five contests of the season with their lone victory against league foe South Carolina State. Macky Fifita leads the squad with 73 total kills.
 
San Jose State (2-0) enters the weekend flawless with victories over Pepperdine, 3-2, and San Francisco, 3-1. Recently, outside hitter Giulia Gávio was named the Mountain West Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week.
 
UC-Riverside (2-1) began the season winning two-out-of-three versus Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-0, and Drake, 3-1. Before the season, the Highlanders were predicted to finish eighth in the Big West Conference.
 
Despite the slow start, HU (1-3) looks to build momentum as they prepare for conference play, which begins within less than a month at Maryland Eastern Shore. Donaldson spearheads the Bison attack with 51 total kills.
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
 
On Sept. 8-9, the Bison's road trip continues in Charlottesville, Va. for the Jefferson Cup where Ohio, Virginia Commonwealth, and Virginia await.
