WASHINGTON (October 12, 2017) – After a 1-1 SWAC series finale last weekend in Alabama, Coach
Brent Leiba and the Howard University Women's Soccer team begin a five-match home stretch to close out the regular season.
The homestand begins with matches against the Southern Jaguars and the Jackson State Tigers. Friday's showdown against the Jaguars begins at 7 p.m., with Sunday's matchup with the Tigers slated for 1 p.m.
MATCHUP PREVIEW
SOUTHERN
Southern comes in looking for their first win of season after 10 tries (0-9-1, 0-4-1 SWAC). Forward Sophia Zavala spearheads the Jaguars' attack, she was named to the All-SWAC Preseason Second Team prior to the start of the season.
JACKSON STATE
In their last match, Jackson State (2-10-2, 2-2-2 SWAC) tied with Mississippi Valley State, 0-0. JSU is winless on the road this season with its home wins over Prairie View A&M and Alcorn State.
HOWARD
HU (5-8, 4-2 SWAC) ends its 2017 regular season with five straight home matches, including four league contests. Currently, Howard is fourth in the SWAC standings behind Grambling State, Alabama State, and Texas Southern. Senior
Kela Gray leads the Bison offense with a pair of game-winning goals.
LAST TIMEOUT
On Friday, Oct. 6, HU fell on the road to Alabama State (ASU), 4-1, despite outshooting the Hornets, 15-10.
Jasmin Miller scored the lone goal for the Bison.
Sunday, Oct. 8, Gray scored the game-winner and propelled the squad over Alabama A&M, 2-1, in Huntsville, Ala. With less than five minutes remaining, Gray delivered the eventual game-winner between the legs of A&M's Jodi Medina, 2-1.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
HU concludes nonconference play when Yale comes to town. Wednesday night's showdown starts 7 p.m. at Greene Stadium.
