MATCHUP PREVIEW
This will be the 74th meeting between DSU and HU with the Hornets leading the all-time series, 39-33-1. In the last five years, each contest has been decided by seven points or less.
Anthony Philyaw rushed for a school-record 281 yards and led Howard to a 26-21 win over Delaware State at Greene Stadium. As a result, the California native reached the 1,000-yard plateau for the first time in his career.
Delaware State (0-5, 0-3 MEAC) is looking to break a 16-game losing streak at homecoming. The streak dates back to last season when the Hornets finished winless (0-11, 0-8 MEAC). DSU's last victory came against HU in the 2015 regular season finale in Dover, 32-31.
DSU has struggled on both sides of the ball, posting less than nine points per game while allowing 34 points per game. Despite the squad's tough season, junior running back Brycen Alleyne has been one of the team's bright spots. As of today, Alleyne ranks second in the conference's all-purpose category (123.8 yards per game).
"He's really fast," London referring to Alleyne. "They have a lot of guys who can run. I know Coach [Kenny] Carter will have his team ready. We're excited about the challenge."
Howard (2-3, 1-1 MEAC) looks to get back to .500 on the season. The victory will also surpass last year's win total while putting the Bison at 3-3 for the first time since 2012 where they finished 7-4 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
"It's a different mindset," London added. "The players realize they are never out of it. I am proud of the overall effort, but we need to continue to do the necessary things to allow us to go 3-3."
HU averages 26.4 points per game and 417.8 total offense per game, both are second in the conference behind North Carolina A&T State. Majority of the offense comes from the ground, led by Philyaw and freshman
Caylin Newton. Currently, both Bison are among the top three rushers in the MEAC.
LAST TIMEOUT
Howard struck first with a 75-yard touchdown pass from Newton to sophomore
Damion Gillespie, but came up short against NCCU, 13-7, at Greene Stadium.
"They are a very good team in a lot of ways," said Coach London on Tuesday's weekly teleconference. "I was very proud of my team, going toe-to-toe with them. For our guys to battle and compete, I think we did a good job."
Despite outgaining the Eagles by nearly 65 yards, 400-336, North Carolina Central capitalized on two Bison turnovers with 10 points.
Newton had his best performance in the air, throwing for a career-high 328 yards and a touchdown.
Gillespie and senior
Guy Lemonier Jr. each registered 100-yard receiving games. Gillespie racked up a game-high 153 yards on six catches while Lemonier also caught six balls for 111 yards in the loss.
