Bison duo lead football team to victory in annual event

NORFOLK, Va. (August 31, 2026) – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) revealed its football weekly honors where Howard University saw a pair of Bison recognized for their performances in the season opener. The announcement came Monday afternoon.

Graduate quarterback Ja'Shawn Scroggins (Las Vegas) won MEAC Offensive Player of the Week while fellow classmate linebacker Rodney Roane Jr. (Richmond, Va.) took home the league's Defensive Player of the Week.

Scroggins, who was recently named BOXTOROW HBCU National Player of the Week earlier today, led Howard to a 31-24 victory over Alabama A&M (AAMU) in the annual Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge, throwing for 322 yards and three touchdowns while adding 49 rushing yards on 15 carries.

For Roane, he recorded six total tackles (three solos), including a tackle for loss, in the win over AAMU. The Virginia native also added a 20-yard INT, a fumble recovery and a QB hurry.

North Carolina Central's Nelson Layne was named MEAC Rookie of the Week while South Carolina State's Kiande Marsh earned Offensive Lineman of the Week. Delaware State's Patrick Fisher-Butler rounded out the honorees as the conference's Specialist of the Week.

Howard hosts Richmond Saturday (Sept. 5) at Greene Stadium in its home opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
