DURHAM, N.C. – The Howard University women's basketball team is looking to bounce back as it prepares to take on North Carolina Central on Monday, Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m. in McDougald-McLendon Arena.
The Bison suffered their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) loss when they dropped a 63-55 decision to defending champion North Carolina A&T on Saturday afternoon. This season, Howard (7-9, 3-1 MEAC) is 2-7 in road contests.
Redshirt senior Te'Shya Heslip has been a key factor on both sides of the ball for the Bison, averaging a team-high 15.9 points, 5.3 assists and 4.3 steals. Her steals per game tally ranks third nationally and she comes in 40th in assists per contest, while leading the conference in both categories. Heslip has also posted double-digits in scoring in 15 of 16 outings this season.
Senior Sydni Johnson stands second on the team with 10.4 points per game, followed by redshirt junior Erin Blaine with 10.1 points and 5.1 rebounds. Johnson poured in 20 points and grabbed six boards when the Bison defeated NCCU, 68-61, on Dec. 7, 2015. Howard is 7-0 all-time against the Lady Eagles.
NCCU had a tough time on the road last week as it dropped a pair of MEAC games to Norfolk State and Hampton. Although they have struggled outside of Durham, the Lady Eagles (3-13, 2-2 MEAC) are 3-5 at home and have won their last two matchups in its on-campus arena.
Senior Morgan Jones leads the Lady Eagles on 11.5 points per game. Next up, sophomores Deja McCain and Dominique Adams are chipping in 6.8 points each. McCain is pulling down a team-best 5.5 rebounds, while Adams tops the league with 35.6 minutes played per contest.
