Hampton, VA—The Howard University women's basketball team will be looking to snap a four-game losing skid when they take on the Lady Pirates of Hampton University on Saturday at 4 pm in the Convocation Center.
Back on February 8, the Bison recorded at what the time was regarded as the season turnaround game. Howard (5-22, 3-11 in the MEAC) defeated the five-time league champs, 83-77 in overtime. It snapped a 14-game losing streak to the Lady Pirates.
Howard used that victory as a spring board to then go on and defeat a good Coppin State team on the road.
But since that time, the Bison have struggled and been unable to finish games. The latest was a 64-53 home loss to Florida A&M on Wednesday in which they led most of the game before faltering in the second half.
Foul trouble and lack of depth have been key factors in the slide. Some key players have missed games and it has been a challenge for first year head coach Ty Grace to get any consistency.
The Lady Pirates (10-12, 10-3 in the MEAC) rely heavily upon their preseason player of the year, Malia Tate-DeFreitas, who leads the MEAC in scoring as the do-everything player for the young Hampton. She singlehandedly kept her team in the game in DC, tallying before fouling out in overtime.
The Bison played without their Gonzales in that game, but guard Te'Shya Heslip had the game of her life, recording her first ever triple double of 22 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists.
